Ali Abbasi’s film The Apprentice was scheduled to open in U.S. theaters on October 11, 2024—less than a month before the November 5 presidential election. The date refers to the 2024 drama about Donald Trump and lawyer Roy Cohn, not the reality television series. It was a U.S. theatrical date, not a worldwide release date.
When did The Apprentice come out?
The U.S. theatrical release date was Friday, October 11, 2024, according to distributor Métropole Films. The Washington Post reported the date on August 30, 2024, describing the release as coming less than a month before Election Day. Métropole Films’ listing confirms the theatrical date; The Washington Post’s report provides the election context.
The date should not be treated as the film’s global release date. The Post reported that the UK and Ireland theatrical release was due a week later.
Why was the date called a pre-election release?
The U.S. election took place on November 5, 2024, so the announced October 11 opening placed the film in theaters before voters went to the polls. The timing was notable because the film had premiered at Cannes in May but still had no U.S. distributor when the Associated Press reported on it June 7. Briarcliff Entertainment secured U.S. distribution by August, when the release date was announced. The Associated Press reported the June distribution status; the Post covered Briarcliff’s deal and the announced date.

The chronology does not establish that election timing alone caused the delay in U.S. distribution. The Post also reported legal threats and production-side complications, but those details do not prove a single explanation for the gap between the Cannes premiere and the U.S. deal.
What is the film about?
The Apprentice is a 2024 drama and biographical film directed by Ali Abbasi and written by Gabriel Sherman. Cannes describes it as a story of young Donald Trump’s rise through a relationship with Roy Cohn, the influential lawyer and political fixer. That is the film’s premise, not a guarantee that every dramatized scene is a verified historical record.
