Dune: Prophecy star Emma Canning describes young Tula’s killing of Orry Atreides as a choice made under pressure, not a simple rejection of the feelings she had developed for him. In season one, episode three, “Sisterhood Above All,” Tula’s relationship with Orry begins as part of her family’s revenge plan; when she follows through, she is also trying to protect herself and win Valya’s approval. Canning says Tula spares one child during the massacre.
What happens in Tula’s deadly betrayal?
In episode three, young Tula Harkonnen draws close to Orry Atreides while acting on her family’s desire for revenge against the Atreides. She poisons Orry and kills members of his family. The relationship is therefore both personal and part of a deliberate plot: Tula connects with Orry, then turns that connection into a means of carrying out the revenge.
The episode is officially titled “Sisterhood Above All.” Apple TV’s U.S. listing describes Dune: Prophecy as a 2024 HBO science-fiction drama set 10,000 years before Paul Atreides and centered on the origins of the Sisterhood that becomes the Bene Gesserit. Its first season lists six episodes, with “Sisterhood Above All” as episode three. Apple TV’s series and episode listing
Why does Tula kill Orry?
Canning, who plays young Tula, portrays the decision as conflicted and pressured. In an interview with Winter Is Coming, she said Tula had connected with Orry and recognized something of herself in his low position within his family. But Canning also said Tula may see him as a threat and feels cornered into killing him.

“I do think even her decision to follow through with Orry’s murder is a conflicted one. I don’t think it’s clear that she’s going to follow through. I think she feels cornered into doing that, and I think probably worries that he’s a threat to herself more than anything else.”
That reading makes the betrayal painful without making it accidental: Tula is executing a revenge plan, but her feelings for Orry complicate what she has chosen to do. Canning’s interview with Winter Is Coming

Did Tula love Orry?
Canning describes Tula as developing feelings for Orry as their relationship unfolds. In a separate interview, she called it a revenge story that changes as Tula becomes more independent. Canning also suggested that Tula’s skill at deception extends inward: “Perhaps one of Tula’s greatest skills is lying. I know she’s even lying to herself. The greatest lies are the ones we believe in ourselves.”
That interpretation helps explain the episode’s emotional turn. Tula can feel a connection and still carry out the family’s revenge; the feelings do not erase the plan, but they make its cost visible. Canning described her as “utterly heartbroken” afterward and said Tula seeks Valya’s approval and respect. Canning’s interview with Temple of Geek

Why does Tula spare a child?
Canning says Tula does not kill everyone in the household. Correcting an interviewer’s assumption, she said: “Not everyone! She does spare one person.” The interview establishes that one child survives, but Canning does not give a further explanation for Tula’s decision in the quoted exchange. It is safest to treat the spared child as a limit to the massacre, rather than assume a motive the actor did not specify.
How is this different from Tula’s later secret?
The episode-three massacre is not the same betrayal as the secret revealed in the season-one finale. In episode six, the story reveals that Tula gave birth to Desmond Hart. Showrunner Alison Schapker confirmed that Desmond was planned as Tula’s son, making his survival and identity a separate source of tension between the sisters. That concealment damages Valya’s trust. TheWrap quotes Emily Watson describing Valya’s reaction to learning that Tula’s son survived as “the betrayal of that is very painful.” Olivia Williams also describes Tula feeling trusted by Valya shortly before Desmond has Tula arrested. So “Tula’s deadly betrayal” most directly describes what she does to Orry and his family in episode three. The finale adds another betrayal: Tula’s concealment of Desmond’s survival from Valya.
