Coverage reported that she died following a long bout with cancer, though published accounts differ on the date of her death. Johnson was 56 during the season’s filming, won its final two immunity challenges and lost to Ethan Zohn in a 5–2 jury vote.
What is known about Kim Johnson’s death
Entertainment Weekly reported that Johnson died on July 23, 2024, after a long bout with cancer, citing confirmation from her children. Entertainment Weekly’s report was published July 29. Legacy’s obituary listing gives July 29, 2024, as her death date, and TheWrap’s July 29 report also uses that date. The coverage does not reconcile the difference, so July 23 is Entertainment Weekly’s reported date rather than a date consistently established by the available accounts.
The reports identify cancer as the cause, but do not provide further medical details. In a statement quoted by Entertainment Weekly, her children remembered her for “strength, resilience, kindness and generosity,” and said she “wore her rose-colored glasses right up until the end.”
Johnson’s run on Survivor: Africa
Johnson competed on the third season of Survivor, filmed in Africa, at age 56. She reached the final two against Ethan Zohn and won the season’s last two immunity challenges. At the final tribal council, the jury voted 5–2 for Zohn.

Those details made her finish notable: Johnson reached the finale and received two jury votes, even though Zohn won the title. After her death, host and executive producer Jeff Probst called her a “pioneer on Survivor” and noted that she earned a place in the final two and received votes to win.
How Zohn and Probst remembered her
Zohn, her fellow finalist and the season’s winner, remembered Johnson as a friend. In a tribute quoted by TheWrap, he wrote: “It was a blessing to call you my friend and a privilege to experience the final tribal council with you.”

Probst’s tribute recognized Johnson’s place in the show’s history as well as her finale performance. His words were reported by Variety in a syndicated report published July 29, 2024.

Reporting based on CBS’s cast profile says Johnson was born in Cleveland, grew up in Annapolis and later lived in Oyster Bay. She had retired from teaching elementary school, volunteered to assist blind and deaf people, and had three children. She was 79 at the time of her death, according to the published coverage.
