Amy Madigan won her first Academy Award on March 15, 2026, taking Actress in a Supporting Role for playing Aunt Gladys in Weapons. The win came 40 years after her earlier Oscar nomination for Twice in a Lifetime—a gap between nominations, not a claim about how long she waited after the film’s release.

What Oscar did Amy Madigan win for Weapons?

At the 98th Academy Awards, Madigan won Actress in a Supporting Role for her performance as Aunt Gladys in Weapons, the 2025 film. The Academy’s official ceremony record lists Madigan and the film as the category’s winner: The 98th Academy Awards.

Why is the win described as coming 40 years after her nomination?

Madigan’s previous Oscar nomination was for supporting actress in Twice in a Lifetime, a 1985 film recognized at the 1986 Academy Awards. Her Weapons win followed four decades later, in 2026. The 40-year figure describes the span between those Oscar nominations; it is not the time since Twice in a Lifetime was released.

The Associated Press described the interval as the longest gap between Oscar nominations for an actress. That distinction is specifically about the gap between nominations for actresses, not a universal record for the longest wait to win an Oscar in any category. AP also reported that Madigan was 75 at the 2026 ceremony. Associated Press coverage of Madigan’s win.

Madigan on horror and the meaning of the award

Before the ceremony, Madigan told 6abc Philadelphia that the attention around Weapons had helped audiences recognize horror as serious filmmaking: “It’s kind of great because it’s really nice that people understand that the genre of horror is very serious filmmaking.” 6abc’s March 3, 2026 interview.

In her acceptance remarks, as reported by AP, Madigan acknowledged the question she had heard about the 40-year interval: “Everybody’s asking me … ‘Well it’s been 40 years, what’s different about this time?’” Her answer was: “What’s different is this little gold guy.” She also thanked the people who had helped her, saying, “But you’re not rattling them off. They mean something to you; that you couldn’t be here without them.”

Weapons on Blu-ray: check the edition and region

Warner Bros. Japan lists a Japanese Blu-ray + DVD edition of Weapons, released March 18, 2026. The official listing specifies two discs, English audio, Japanese and English subtitles, and three video extras: a making-of feature, a cast feature, and “building the fear.” This confirms details for that Japanese edition only; disc formats, region compatibility, language options, and availability can differ elsewhere.
