Venus Vafa said she kept her hidden immunity idol because she gambled that Charlie Davis would vote with her to eliminate Q Burdette. She hoped the move would strengthen her connection with Charlie while leaving the idol available for a later round. Vafa later said the gamble failed and that her vague hint about having another advantage may have made Charlie wary.
What happened at the vote
In Episode 11 of Survivor 46, “My Messy, Sweet Little Friend,” Vafa did not play her hidden immunity idol at Tribal Council and was voted out. CBS lists the episode as airing May 8, 2024; its synopsis notes an idol hunt at NuiNui beach. CBS’s episode guide identifies the installment and air date.
Why Vafa chose to keep the idol
Vafa told TVLine that she saw Charlie as the swing vote and viewed the choice as “very much a 50/50 moment.” She hoped that if he joined her in voting against Q, the move would reaffirm the bond she had been trying to build with him. Keeping the idol also meant she could potentially use it later rather than spend it at that Tribal Council. Vafa’s TVLine interview
In a separate interview with Parade, Vafa said she imagined using the idol at Final Six, or at Final Five if she won immunity. Those were possibilities she considered at the time, not a guaranteed path forward. She also hoped that voting successfully with Charlie would help solidify an alliance. Vafa’s Parade interview

The trade-off she was weighing
Vafa’s account describes a choice between using the idol for immediate protection and preserving it for a later vote. She chose the second option because she thought Charlie might vote with her, creating both a strategic opening against Q and a stronger relationship. But the same plan left her exposed if Charlie did not join her vote.
Vafa did not say she believed she was certain to be safe; she described the decision as a gamble. Her “50/50” characterization was her estimate of Charlie’s vote, not an independently verified probability.

Why the Charlie conversation may have backfired
Vafa later identified her conversation with Charlie as the decisive misstep. She said she hinted that she had “something else going on” without clearly disclosing the idol, hoping to give him a reason to keep working with her. In retrospect, she thought he could instead interpret the hint as a threat to his game. Vafa said she might have stayed if she had kept quiet until Tribal Council.
TVLine’s recap reports that Charlie was weighing his options and that Vafa alluded to a possible advantage before the vote. The interviews establish Vafa’s retrospective understanding of the exchange; they do not independently establish Charlie’s private reasoning. TVLine’s Episode 11 recap

The social context Vafa described
Vafa also connected her difficulty building relationships to an early misunderstanding. She recalled stepping away after a challenge to wash clothes and said other players apparently thought she was idol hunting. That is her explanation of how some contestants may have perceived her, rather than confirmation of what every player believed.
In her post-elimination interviews, Vafa described feeling socially isolated, struggling with first impressions, and wishing she had made more friends. Those reflections help explain why she hoped the vote could deepen her connection with Charlie; they do not establish her fellow contestants’ motives.
