Song Sung Blue is a dramatized true-story musical about Mike and Claire Sardina, a couple who join forces as Lightning and Thunder, a Neil Diamond tribute act. Hugh Jackman and Kate Hudson supply its strongest draw: their musical performances and the chemistry at the center of a story that moves from romance and working-class pressures into tragedy. That mix can make the film an affecting crowd-pleaser—or feel tonally uneven, depending on the viewer.
What is Song Sung Blue about?
Written and directed by Craig Brewer, the 2025 drama stars Jackman as Mike Sardina and Hudson as Claire Sardina. The two musicians form Lightning and Thunder, a Neil Diamond tribute band. Michael Imperioli, Ella Anderson, King Princess, Mustafa Shakir, Fisher Stevens and Jim Belushi are among the supporting cast. Focus Features describes the real Mike and Claire as falling in love and marrying after joining forces in the band.
The film is based on Greg Kohs’ 2008 documentary, but it is a feature-film dramatization, not a documentary or a scene-by-scene account. Brewer said he spoke with Claire and her children and compressed a story that unfolded over 16 years into roughly two or three years for the film. As he put it, “I had to be creative and think of ways to bring into a single-scene things that might appear scattered.” Brewer’s Focus Features interview explains his approach to shaping the story.
How well do Jackman and Hudson carry the film?
The performances are the film’s clearest strength. The Guardian’s Peter Bradshaw praised both leads and called the movie an entertaining crowd-pleaser. Jackman takes on Diamond’s sound and stage presence, while Hudson’s singing gives Claire’s musical role real force. AP film writer Mark Kennedy likewise praised the songs and Hudson’s vocals, writing, “The songs are excellently handled.” Those are critics’ judgments, not a guarantee that the film will work for every viewer.

The songs do more than decorate the romance: they give the couple a shared purpose and provide the film’s most vivid moments. The performances are especially compelling when the act is onstage and the leads can show the appeal of Lightning and Thunder as a partnership.
Does the drama’s blend of romance, hardship and tragedy work?
That balance is the main point of disagreement. The film moves among working-class pressures, a love story, musical sequences and startling turns. Bradshaw found the result entertaining; Kennedy felt those shifts could make the film less coherent, even as he praised its music and performances. The contrast is useful to keep in mind: viewers drawn to an emotionally expansive musical melodrama may welcome the changes in register, while those looking for a steady tone may find them jarring.

Is Song Sung Blue worth watching?
It is a good fit if you want a performance-led drama, enjoy Neil Diamond’s songs, or are interested in the real couple behind Lightning and Thunder. Jackman and Hudson bring warmth and musical commitment to the story, and the songs are central to its emotional life. The film is less assured in how it connects its romantic, hardship and tragic passages, so it may not satisfy viewers who want a more even-toned or documentary-like account.
