“La Ofrenda,” the second episode of The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon Season 3, gives Roberto, Justina, and the people of Solaz much of its attention. That detour has a purpose: their story introduces a coercive bargain that divides Daryl and Carol. But it also slows the pair’s journey, making the new characters’ extended setup feel like a detour from the show’s central duo.
What happens in “La Ofrenda”?
Carol first encounters Roberto and Justina as they try to escape. When bandits attack the young couple, Daryl intervenes, then has them take him back to Solaz so Carol can recover. The irony is immediate: Roberto and Justina were fleeing the community that Daryl brings them back to.
In Solaz, the couple’s reason for running becomes clear. The town has an annual arrangement with El Alcazar: it gives up a young woman in exchange for protection. Mayor Federico supports the custom, while Roberto’s father, Antonio, opposes it. A pig race determines who will be selected; after Justina’s pig loses, Alba is chosen.
Daryl would rather avoid getting drawn into the town’s conflict and keep moving toward home. Carol refuses to treat the offering as an acceptable local custom. Their disagreement gives the episode its central tension: whether survival and security justify a system that denies young women a choice.

Why do the new allies take up so much of the episode?
Roberto and Justina’s escape opens the door to the offering custom, while the pig race makes its consequences concrete. Alba is not an abstract part of a political bargain; she is the person the town has selected to bear its cost. That focus gives the episode a distinct local conflict, but it also shifts substantial attention away from Daryl and Carol’s own journey.
The result is a trade-off. The Solaz characters give Carol a reason to challenge Daryl’s instinct to keep moving, and they make the conflict about more than an obstacle on the road. At the same time, the episode spends enough time establishing the town and its rules that viewers invested mainly in Daryl and Carol may feel the story has paused for a new cast of characters.

What do Federico and Paz add to the conflict?
Federico’s support for the offering need not make him a simple villain. Ready Steady Cut reads him as fearful, suggesting that he sees the arrangement as a way to protect Solaz. TVLine, by contrast, emphasizes the bargain’s coercive effects on the young women subject to it. Those readings bring out the episode’s tension between a community’s security and individual freedom without making the two sides morally equivalent.
Paz adds a personal risk to the political dispute. He helped Roberto and Justina escape and is romantically connected to Elena, the future king’s intended. That connection puts another relationship in danger if the town’s arrangement is challenged.

How does the bandolero attack change the stakes?
A bandolero who escaped Daryl’s earlier attack tracks him back to Solaz. Daryl kills that attacker and two others, but the confrontation carries a cost: the danger he hoped to leave behind reaches the town. The episode therefore complicates Daryl’s preference to stay out of local affairs. His return has already brought Roberto and Justina back to Solaz, and the pursuers make the community’s exposure more immediate.
