Spoilers for all five episodes of Sirens. No: Michaela is not revealed to be leading a cult. The wildlife foundation is legitimate, and the finale shifts the real source of power at Cliff House into sharper focus: Peter’s wealth and influence. Simone chooses to stay with him and takes Michaela’s place, while Devon returns to Buffalo with their father.
What happens at the end of Sirens?
After Michaela sees photographs of Peter kissing Simone, she fires Simone. Facing a return to Buffalo, Simone goes back to Cliff House and tells Peter that Michaela is keeping the photographs as protection in case he tries to divorce her. Peter ends the marriage and removes Michaela from the estate.
Simone takes Michaela’s place beside Peter and becomes head of the Folger Wildlife Preservation Society. Devon leaves for Buffalo with their father, Bruce. The finale thus gives Simone the life she has decided she wants, but it also leaves her inside a household where a woman’s position can be transferred with startling speed.
Was Michaela leading a cult?
No. The foundation’s rituals and Michaela’s hold over the people around her make Devon’s suspicion plausible, but the finale does not reveal a cult, a supernatural power, or a secret coercive organization. “Cult-like” describes the impression the show cultivates; it is not the literal answer the ending provides.

Devon also accuses Michaela of killing Peter’s former wife, Jocelyn. Michaela says Jocelyn is alive, living as a recluse after being disfigured by plastic surgery following her divorce from Peter. Creator and showrunner Molly Smith Metzler said Jocelyn’s story was meant to explore how beauty and youth can become currencies that drive people toward self-destruction. Netflix Tudum’s finale explainer includes Metzler’s and the cast’s discussion of these revelations.
Does Simone love Peter, and is she happy?
The series does not confirm either answer. Metzler suggests Simone may be telling Devon—and herself—a story about love, and describes the final image as a “Mona Lisa smile.” She leaves it to viewers to decide what Simone feels.

The cast offers different readings rather than a definitive resolution. Milly Alcock sees Simone as feeling safe with Peter and treating him as an ally, not necessarily as someone she loves. Kevin Bacon, by contrast, says Peter does fall in love with Simone. The gap between those interpretations is part of the ending’s unease: Simone may have found security, but the show does not establish that she has found happiness.
Why does Simone stay while Devon leaves?
The sisters make different choices about what they owe their family and where they can build a life. Simone’s refusal to return to Buffalo is shaped by childhood trauma and the experience of being left to fend for herself. Metzler said she wanted viewers to understand why Simone might feel desperate not to go back, even if they judge her decision harshly.

Devon chooses to return with Bruce rather than accept Morgan’s offer to sail away. She tells Simone that leaving college to care for her sister was the best thing she had done. On the ferry, Devon and Michaela make peace. Actor Meghann Fahy says Devon recognizes she had been blaming Michaela for Simone’s own choice; Metzler describes Devon as a caretaker who has to learn to care for herself, too.
What does the ending say about Peter’s power?
The apparent mystery of Michaela’s influence gives way to the power structure around Peter. Metzler calls the finale a “rude awakening” in which “we all work for Peter.” Simone replaces Michaela as Peter’s partner and as head of the foundation, while the household and its guests appear to accept the new Mrs. Kell quickly. Metzler likens the change to a recasting.

That quick replacement suggests a cycle in which women are brought into and discarded from a world organized around a wealthy man’s status. The story’s concerns with beauty, marriage, and motherhood are not simply about Michaela’s supposed control; they also show how women are valued and judged within Peter’s world.

Metzler points out that audiences often hear about sirens from sailors’ perspectives, not the sirens’ own. The series uses that imbalance to question who gets called a monster or seductress—and whether such a figure might instead be trapped or calling for help. Its mystery encourages suspicion of Michaela, but its ending also asks viewers to reconsider whose point of view made her seem monstrous in the first place.

What happens to Michaela after the finale?
The series ends without establishing what Michaela does next. In a May 2025 interview with TheWrap, Metzler imagined Michaela returning to legal work and Devon recovering and building a life of her own, but those are possibilities, not events confirmed by the show. Metzler described the story as having a beginning, middle, and end while also saying she could write these characters indefinitely; no further season or future for the characters is confirmed by those remarks.
