Its cosmic spectacle and playful animation have clear appeal, but Associated Press critic Lindsey Bahr finds that merchandise-minded storytelling and competing character threads sometimes crowd the ride. Her review suggests a sequel that is entertaining without fully capturing the games’ worlds.
What is The Super Mario Galaxy Movie about?
The 2026 animated film is a follow-up to The Super Mario Bros. Movie, produced by Nintendo’s Shigeru Miyamoto and Illumination’s Chris Meledandri and distributed by Universal Pictures. Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic return as directors, with Matthew Fogel writing and Brian Tyler composing. Nintendo’s movie page and the release-date announcement identify it as a new film based on the world of Super Mario Bros..
In Universal’s official synopsis, Mario and Luigi handle problems around the Mushroom Kingdom, meet Yoshi, and try to reform a miniaturized Bowser. A call for help takes the group across the galaxy, where Rosalina and Bowser Jr. become part of the larger adventure. Peach’s birthday and questions about her origins add personal threads to the journey.
The returning cast includes Chris Pratt as Mario, Anya Taylor-Joy as Peach, Charlie Day as Luigi, Jack Black as Bowser, and Keegan-Michael Key as Toad. Benny Safdie voices Bowser Jr., Kevin Michael Richardson voices Kamek, and Brie Larson voices Rosalina. Later Universal materials also list Donald Glover, Issa Rae, and Luis Guzmán.

Does the sequel feel overstuffed?
Bahr’s Associated Press review supports that concern, though it is one critic’s judgment rather than a consensus. She sees a movie juggling Mario and Luigi’s trip, Peach’s background, Yoshi, and the father-son tension between Bowser and Bowser Jr. Her line that Mario and Luigi are “just along for the ride” refers to how those other character threads can take focus. AP awarded the film two and a half stars out of four.
The crowding is also tonal. Bahr objects to merchandise worked into the story, arguing that it can interrupt the fantasy instead of making the world feel more alive. That is a specific criticism of the film’s commercial world-building, not a claim that every viewer will find the references distracting.

What works in the film’s cosmic spectacle?
Bahr describes the movie as light and playful, with colorful fantasy and an inviting vision of outer space. She singles out an inventive sequence that shifts Mario’s 2D, 8-bit form into modern 3D animation. That visual change gives the film a cinematic pleasure distinct from simply reproducing a game on screen.
The family conflict between Bowser and Bowser Jr. gives the spectacle an emotional counterpoint, while Peach’s questions about her origins broaden her role beyond the birthday celebration. The result, in Bahr’s account, is an energetic adventure whose visual imagination is more consistently appealing than its crowded storytelling.

How does the movie compare with the Super Mario Galaxy games?
The film draws on the Galaxy idea of moving through an expansive, otherworldly setting, but it is not presented as a direct adaptation of the games’ plots. Bahr notes that some fans may want a deeper commitment to the games’ worlds than the movie offers. Its approach is to use familiar characters and cosmic imagery as ingredients in a new ensemble story.
That distinction matters if you are choosing between watching the film and playing the games: the movie emphasizes character interplay and animated spectacle, while Nintendo’s movie page points fans to enhanced versions of Super Mario Galaxy and Super Mario Galaxy 2 for Nintendo Switch 2 and Nintendo Switch systems. The games are related ways to spend more time in the Galaxy setting, not substitutes for the film’s story.

Universal lists the film as PG for action, mild violence, and rude humor, with a runtime of 1 hour 39 minutes. That rating describes the distributor’s content guidance; it cannot determine whether the film will suit every child. Parents should use their own judgment about the action and humor in light of a child’s age and sensitivities.
