Sex Education offers a useful case. Actor Aimee Lou Wood later described how filming Aimee’s masturbation scene felt, while intimacy coordinator Ita O’Brien argued that intimate content works best when it serves the writing rather than functioning as decoration.
Why sex on television was being discussed differently in lockdown
The Standard’s 22 May 2020 feature placed changing portrayals of sex against the restrictions of lockdown. Its central point was not simply that television showed more intimacy, but that intimate content could carry narrative weight. Ita O’Brien, the intimacy coordinator quoted in the article, said: “In newer productions, the intimate content is absolutely part of the core, the integral essence of what the storytelling is about… Through intimate content now, we’re able to better serve the writing and really serve storytelling.” (The Standard)
That is a standard worth applying to any scene involving sex: does it reveal character, change a relationship, or move the story forward? If it does, the scene has a dramatic purpose. If it exists only to be provocative, it risks feeling detached from the people and consequences around it.
What Aimee Lou Wood said about filming Aimee’s masturbation scene
Wood’s most detailed account came later, in a Glamour interview, not in the May 2020 lockdown coverage. She said filming the solo masturbation scene was harder for her than scenes with another actor. With a scene partner, she explained, there was someone to joke with and help reassure her; doing the scene alone left her without that shared point of support. That was Wood’s experience, not a rule about how performers respond to intimate scenes. (Glamour)

Wood also recalled O’Brien preparing performers for the emotional after-effects that can follow a vulnerable scene. As Wood quoted the coordinator: “Sometimes you’ll feel pretty exhilarated after you’ve just done the sex scene, and then a day later or two days later you get a bit of a vulnerability hangover and you’re like, ‘Shit!’” Wood said that, for her, the feeling arrived later: “A couple of days later I was like, ‘Oh my god!’” O’Brien checked in with performers afterward, Wood said. (Glamour)
The account makes an important distinction: preparing and filming an intimate scene does not necessarily end when the cameras stop. Performers may experience a delayed emotional response, and Wood described a production process in which that possibility was discussed and followed up.

How intimacy coordination changes the work behind a scene
Retrospective coverage describes O’Brien’s approach as talking through intimate scenes with performers in advance and choreographing what happens. BBC Culture called Sex Education one of the first major productions to employ a dedicated intimacy coordinator—not the first production ever to do so. (BBC Culture)
Advance discussion and choreography make an intimate scene part of the production’s planned work, rather than an improvised demand made of performers in the moment. That approach also fits O’Brien’s argument that intimate content should serve the story: performers and production can plan how a scene communicates character and relationship, as well as how it will be staged.

What the show’s sexual storylines make visible—and what they cannot replace
Sex Education gives viewers storylines that move beyond idealized romance. Aimee’s masturbation scene treats solo sexual experience as part of a character’s story, while Lily’s vaginismus storyline brings a specific difficulty into the show’s broader account of sexuality. These are examples of a wider range of experiences appearing in television drama; they do not prove that one series changed the medium on its own. (BBC Culture; The Independent)
Representation is not the same thing as instruction. The Independent reports O’Brien’s caution that television should not substitute for comprehensive, age-appropriate sex education. A drama can prompt recognition or conversation, but it is not a complete guide to sexual health, consent, or relationships. (The Independent)

What Wood said about the show’s personal impact
In the same Glamour interview, Wood connected the series with her decision to seek therapy: “I think the only reason why I even started going to therapy in the first place was because of Sex Education.” She also named Bryony Gordon’s Mad Girl and The Imp of the Mind while discussing reading and self-exploration. Those remarks describe Wood’s own experience; they are not a claim that the show or either book will have the same effect for every viewer. (Glamour)
A practical way to judge whether sex on TV is changing
The examples around Sex Education suggest useful questions for watching intimate scenes, without turning a handful of productions into proof of an industry-wide transformation:

- Story: Does the scene reveal character or affect what happens next?
- Human detail: Does the portrayal make room for awkwardness, pleasure, consent, or consequences alongside desire?
- Preparation: Is there evidence that performers’ intimate scenes were discussed and choreographed in advance?
- Limits: Is the show being treated as drama, rather than as a replacement for age-appropriate, comprehensive sex education?
The lockdown-era debate supplied a frame for asking what intimate scenes contribute to television. Wood’s later account adds a performer’s perspective on the vulnerability involved, while the show’s storylines illustrate how sex on screen can be tied to character rather than idealized romance alone. The available examples support a change in what television can make visible, not a measured claim about how far the whole industry has changed.
