Ryan Gosling hosted Saturday Night Live on April 13, 2024, with Chris Stapleton as musical guest. It was Gosling’s third time hosting—not his fourth. The Season 49, Episode 17 broadcast leaned into his Barbie-era Ken persona and his repeated difficulty keeping a straight face, with “Get That Boy Back,” a return of the Close Encounters characters, and a live-action Beavis and Butt-Head sketch among its standouts.
Episode details
The episode aired April 13, 2024, as Season 49, Episode 17. Peacock lists a 69-minute runtime and a TV-14 rating, and identifies Gosling as host and Stapleton as performer. Peacock’s episode listing has the full episode.
The “fourth time” in the supplied title does not describe this broadcast: the Los Angeles Times recap identifies it as Gosling’s third hosting appearance.
The sketches and moments to know
Cold open: the aliens return
Gosling reunited with Kate McKinnon and Sarah Sherman for another installment of the show’s Close Encounters alien-abduction sketches. The familiar contrast remained the joke: Gosling and Sherman described strange abduction experiences, while McKinnon’s Colleen Rafferty brought her own blunt, unvarnished account. The Guardian’s recap singled out the return as a highlight.

Monologue: Ken, a breakup, and Emily Blunt
Gosling opened with a breakup premise that let him play against his public association with Ken from Barbie, then shifted into a musical bit. Emily Blunt, his co-star in The Fall Guy, interrupted; their exchange nodded to the post-Barbie and Oppenheimer cultural moment. The Los Angeles Times and Guardian both describe the monologue and Blunt’s appearance.
“Get That Boy Back”
Chloe Troast, Ego Nwodim, Chloe Fineman, and Stapleton performed a revenge-themed song, with Gosling playing Troast’s brother. The escalating tricks included a shoe-size prank. Both the Los Angeles Times and the Guardian highlighted the sketch; Stapleton’s appearance also gave the musical guest a role beyond his performances.

Beavis and Butt-Head at an AI town hall
Gosling and Mikey Day transformed into the animated Beavis and Butt-Head characters for a sketch about an AI town hall. The physical makeovers were part of the joke, and Heidi Gardner’s struggle to stay in character became a memorable live moment. The Guardian praised the transformation, while the Los Angeles Times focused on the cast breaking during the sketch.
Weekend Update and Caitlin Clark
Caitlin Clark appeared on Weekend Update after Michael Che made a joke about women’s basketball. Clark answered with jokes of her own. The exchange was written comedy; the recaps describe the on-air interaction, not a broader statement about the real people’s views.

Chris Stapleton’s performances
Stapleton performed “White Horse” and “Mountains of My Mind,” as well as joining “Get That Boy Back.” The Los Angeles Times recap names both songs and notes his sketch appearance.

Why Gosling’s laughter became part of the episode
Gosling and cast members repeatedly broke during live sketches. The Los Angeles Times treats the laughter as a defining feature and points especially to the Beavis and Butt-Head sketch. The Guardian also notes the laughter, but gives the episode a stronger overall assessment, praising the cold open and character transformations while finding some later pieces less successful. That difference matters: the laughter could add to a sketch’s live energy, but it could also interrupt its rhythm.
