Colin Jost and Michael Che delivered the jokes; coverage published the following day described the segment’s key lines and context.
What happened in the Weekend Update segment?
The segment aired during the October 12, 2024 episode hosted by Ariana Grande, with Stevie Nicks as musical guest. Jost and Che addressed Trump’s Coachella-area rally before shifting to Vance’s answer in a New York Times interview. Exclaim’s episode report also identifies the episode and the rally discussion.
The Daily Beast’s account, republished by Yahoo Entertainment, describes the reported joke sequence. It is a summary of selected material rather than a full transcript, so the quotations and paraphrases below are limited to what that report provides.
What did Colin Jost joke about at Trump’s Coachella rally?
Jost opened with a joke about Trump holding a rally at the site of the Coachella Music Festival. The report says the audience cheered after Jost referred to Trump threatening to withhold wildfire aid from California. Jost then joked that Trump addressed someone in the crowd as Abraham Lincoln, following up by asking whether, given Trump’s recent rally history, he wanted both himself and Abraham Lincoln to stand up. The Daily Beast’s account, mirrored by Yahoo, reports those details.

Che also joked about Trump’s planned Fox News town hall, a separate beat in the segment before Jost moved to Vance. The available account does not provide Che’s exact wording.
What did JD Vance say about the 2020 election?
In a New York Times interview, Vance was asked five times whether Trump lost the 2020 presidential election. According to the report, Vance answered: “And I’ve answered your question with another question.” Jost’s reported punchline imagined moving the interview under a bridge so Vance could answer in the form of a riddle. The Daily Beast’s coverage supplies the interview context and the quoted response.

The phrase “election denialism” in the original headline characterizes Vance’s refusal to acknowledge Trump’s loss; it is not a quotation from Vance. The reported exchange is the basis for Jost’s joke, not evidence that Vance gave a direct yes-or-no answer.
