NBC’s listing names the clip “Weekend Update: Trump Shares AI-Generated Image of Himself as Pope.” It features anchors Colin Jost and Michael Che and was published May 3, 2025. NBC’s SNL listing and the official SNL YouTube upload identify the segment.
A recap of the segment reports that Che joked about Trump asking Americans to “be patient” regarding the contracting economy. Jost also addressed Trump’s remarks about tariffs and the possibility that children might receive two dolls instead of 30 for Christmas. These are reported joke subjects, not economic findings or a verified account of market performance. The recap is the source for those details.
Why Trump’s pope picture drew attention
Trump shared the image on Truth Social on Friday night, May 2, and the White House later reposted it on X, according to the Associated Press. It showed him in papal dress. Its timing drew notice: Pope Francis had died on April 21, and the image circulated during the mourning period and before the conclave to select his successor. A May 4 CNN transcript also described the image as AI-generated and said the conclave was due to begin at the Vatican on Wednesday. CNN’s transcript provides that contemporaneous context.
The line attributed to Colin Jost
The recap attributes this line to Jost: “Who posts a photo of themselves dressed as a guy who died a week ago?” It reports that he was referring to Trump’s image and Pope Francis’s recent death. The quote is attributed to a secondary recap; consult the official clip for the surrounding exchange or any additional wording.

What the “stock market pleas” wording does—and does not—mean
The available account supports a joke about Trump urging patience over the economy, which the recap describes as contracting. It does not independently verify a stock-market statistic or establish that Weekend Update reported a particular market movement.
