Kamala Harris made a surprise appearance in the cold open of Saturday Night Live on November 2, 2024, three days before Election Day. The sketch paired the real Harris with Maya Rudolph’s impression of her: Rudolph looked into a mirror, and Harris appeared as her reflection.
What happened in the cold open?
The sketch began with election-season impersonations before shifting to Rudolph’s Harris alone with her thoughts. She wished she had someone who understood what it was like to be in her position. The mirror supplied an answer: the real Harris appeared opposite her impression.
Harris offered the reassuring line, “You can open doors.” The joke worked both as encouragement and as a literal nod to the mirror conceit. The two then traded jokes about Harris’s name and the impression’s laugh, ending together with, “Keep calmala and carry on-a-la.”
TheWrap described the entrance as prompting nearly 30 seconds of applause. That is the report’s description of the moment, not a measured audience statistic.

Who else appeared in the sketch?
The cold open’s election-season lineup included Chloe Fineman as CNN anchor Kaitlan Collins, James Austin Johnson as Donald Trump, Bowen Yang as JD Vance, Dana Carvey as Joe Biden, Andy Samberg as Doug Emhoff, and Jim Gaffigan as Tim Walz, according to TV Insider. Harris’s mirror scene came after that run of political impersonations.
Why the 2008 SNL moment is a useful comparison
The Guardian connected the joke about Harris’s laugh to a 2008 SNL appearance in which Hillary Clinton appeared alongside Amy Poehler’s impression of her and questioned whether she really laughed that way. The shared device is a politician confronting an impression of herself and commenting on the performance; the scenes belong to different campaign moments and should not be treated as identical. The Guardian’s recap reports the echo.

When did Harris appear, and what was the episode?
Harris made her SNL debut on November 2, 2024, in the show’s final episode before the presidential election. John Mulaney hosted, and Chappell Roan was the musical guest. The timing made the cameo part of the program’s last pre-election episode rather than a post-election appearance. TV Insider’s episode report identifies the host, musical guest, and cold-open cast.
