Roofman turns a real criminal case into an unlikely collision of robbery, romance and toy-store absurdity. Channing Tatum plays Jeffrey Manchester, the convicted robber whose charm and strange hideout invite sympathy—but the story’s oddball premise does not erase the people harmed by his crimes. The film’s central challenge is making that tension compelling rather than asking viewers to mistake likability for innocence.
What is Roofman about?
Paramount describes Roofman as a 2025 film directed by Derek Cianfrance. Tatum plays Jeffrey Manchester, a former Army Ranger and struggling father who robs McDonald’s restaurants by entering through their roofs. After escaping prison, Manchester secretly lives inside a Toys “R” Us while planning what to do next. He develops a relationship with Leigh, played by Kirsten Dunst, as his concealed life begins to unravel. Those plot details come from the distributor’s synopsis, rather than an independent verification of every event.
The premise is inherently strange: a wanted robber living amid the aisles of a toy store, surrounded by the bright, familiar world of childhood. That contrast gives the film an unusually vivid setting for a crime story. It also sets up the bigger question: can the film make Manchester’s ingenuity and appeal watchable without letting them soften the consequences of what he did?
How does the film handle its tonal tension?
Crime beside absurdity
Cianfrance’s own response to hearing about the case captures the tonal problem. In a BFI interview, he recalled asking, “How deadly serious can that be?” The question is not proof that the crimes were harmless; it points to the bizarre contrast between repeated robberies and the unlikely toy-store concealment. The film’s premise naturally invites comedy, but the robberies remain crimes with real victims, not just colorful steps in an eccentric caper.

Charm without absolution
Tatum’s casting puts audience sympathy at the center of the experience. The title’s promise that he will “steal hearts” describes a response the film can solicit, not a verdict on Manchester’s character. The more the story leans on his ingenuity, fatherhood or romantic connection, the more important it is to keep the damage behind his choices in view. The useful measure is not whether Manchester is likable, but whether the film lets likability stand in for accountability.
Is Roofman based on a true story?
Yes. The film is based on Jeffrey Manchester’s real case. The BFI interview with Cianfrance, AP reporting and TIME’s background coverage connect the film’s premise to Manchester’s robberies and his concealment in a Charlotte Toys “R” Us after escaping prison in 2004. TIME places the robberies in the late 1990s.

That broad basis does not establish that every scene, conversation, relationship or date in the film is literal history. The available reporting supports the outline, not a scene-by-scene fact-check. It is best approached as a dramatization of a documented case, rather than as a complete record of it.
Where was the Toys “R” Us hideout filmed?
The production did not film in the actual store where Manchester hid. AP reports that the original Toys “R” Us had become a church after the chain went bankrupt, so the filmmakers transformed an abandoned store in Pineville, North Carolina, into a convincing, nearly operational-looking set. The work included electrical and plumbing changes, lighting and period-appropriate toys. The Pineville location was the filming set, not Manchester’s original hideout.

Roofman has an arresting setup: a real robber, a fantastically improbable hideout and a star whose screen appeal can pull viewers toward the very person whose actions should give them pause. The premise works best when its comedy and romance sharpen the contradictions instead of disguising the crime. Tatum’s charm may make Manchester fascinating to watch; it should not make him innocent.
