Spoilers for “Charm Offensive,” Season 1, Episode 8. Carol and Zosia kiss after Carol directly accuses the Others of trying to derail her mission. The moment changes their relationship, but it does not resolve whether Zosia’s affection is genuine or part of the hive mind’s effort to make Carol give up on reversing the Joining.
What happens in “Charm Offensive”?
“Charm Offensive,” the eighth episode of Pluribus Season 1, was released December 19, 2025. Carol spends much of the episode with Zosia, drawn toward the companionship even as she continues gathering information about the Others and remains committed to reversing the Joining. The episode’s tension is not simply whether Carol is softening; it is whether that closeness is also being used to change her mind.
The Others stage a recreation of Lauchlin’s, Carol’s favorite diner, and bring back a waitress from her past. At first, the gesture summons a formative memory. Then Carol remembers that the diner burned down. What looks like a loving attempt to comfort her also underscores the losses she associates with the Joined world: the Others can reproduce a place and its people, but that cannot restore what happened or make Carol accept the new order.
Why does Carol kiss Zosia?
Carol confronts Zosia and says the Others are distracting her from her mission. Zosia admits that they want Carol to give up. She also says they love Wycaro, Carol’s fictional series. Carol acknowledges that she likes Zosia and the Others, but insists the Joined world is unsustainable and someone must put it right. Zosia kisses her, and Carol kisses her back.

That is the episode’s turning point: Carol’s feelings are real to her, but her trust in the circumstances is not settled. Rhea Seehorn, who plays Carol, described the conflict in a TV Insider interview published December 19, 2025: “She has real affection for this person at this point, even though she is terrified that there’s nothing real about it.”
Is Zosia manipulating Carol, or are her feelings real?
The episode gives viewers grounds for both readings without confirming either one. The case for manipulation is substantial: Zosia acknowledges that the Others want Carol to stop trying to reverse the Joining, and the reconstructed diner is a deliberate effort to reach her through memory and affection. Carol’s suspicion is not baseless.

But the kiss is not established as a calculated performance. In the same interview, Karolina Wydra, who plays Zosia, described the open question: “Is this kiss where Zosia has genuine feelings and is evolving within the hive mind? Is she evolving to becoming an individual within that and is she having real feelings for Carol, or is she performing for Carol to make her happy?” Wydra leaves the interpretation to viewers. The episode makes the intimacy consequential while withholding a definitive answer about Zosia’s motive.
Has Carol stopped resisting the Joining?
No. Carol’s growing attachment does not amount to abandoning her goal. She continues recording information about the Others, and in her confrontation with Zosia she reiterates that the Joined world cannot last and must be put right. What changes is the emotional cost of resistance: Carol is no longer dealing with the Others only as an adversary. She is also drawn to someone within their collective, which makes it harder to separate strategy from connection.

What do the Others want?
At the personal level, they want Carol to give up on reversing the Joining. Zosia says so directly. She also says the Others love Carol’s writing, adding a more intimate appeal to their effort to win her over.
Their ambition extends beyond Carol and Earth. As reported in The Ringer’s episode recap, Zosia says the Others plan to share the “psychic glue” originating on Kepler-22b with “whoever else might be out there.” That is what the episode discloses about their stated intention; it is separate from any conclusion about whether the plan is wise or benevolent. The same recap notes the tension that the Joined are still dealing with starvation, a pointed contrast between their present crisis and their expansive plans.

Manousos wakes in a Panamanian hospital after the Others save him against his wishes. He escapes and continues north toward the United States. The episode ends with him approaching the border, while Carol’s position remains unsettled after her kiss with Zosia. The two storylines leave different kinds of uncertainty: Manousos is physically moving toward his destination, while Carol has to decide what her new attachment means for her resistance.
