Emily Bader and Tom Blyth are the main reason People We Meet on Vacation works: their playful, appealing chemistry gives the friends-to-lovers story its lift. The film also makes noticeable changes to Emily Henry’s novel, so the adaptation is best approached as its own romantic vacation rather than a scene-by-scene translation.
What is People We Meet on Vacation about?
Directed by Brett Haley, the Netflix film follows Poppy Wright (Emily Bader), a free-spirited traveler, and Alex Nilsen (Tom Blyth), her routine-loving best friend. They live in different cities and take summer trips together over the course of a decade. The question at the center is whether a friendship that has lasted through all those vacations might become something romantic.
Sarah Catherine Hook, Jameela Jamil, Lucien Laviscount, and Lukas Gage round out the ensemble. Haley described the film as one that “doesn’t just tell a love story” but makes viewers feel as if they have gone on vacation with Poppy and Alex, in a statement quoted by Netflix.
Do Emily Bader and Tom Blyth make a convincing pair?
They provide the film’s strongest asset. Bader gives Poppy an impulsive warmth, while Blyth plays Alex’s reserve with enough humor and tenderness to keep it from feeling chilly. Their contrasting energies make the old-friends dynamic legible, and the film’s romantic possibility has room to grow from that rapport.

Netflix’s production feature quotes author Emily Henry recalling the casting chemistry read: “I watched their chemistry read four times in 12 hours, and I loved it more every single time. The very first time I was laughing out loud, and I got so emotional by the end.” Director Haley also praised Blyth’s performance, saying, “He brought so much life, warmth, and quiet humor to the role.” Those are promotional comments, but they align with the screen pair’s central appeal. TechRadar’s review likewise calls their romantic chemistry “sizzling and playful” and sees the cast as a major reason the film works.
How does the adaptation differ from the book?
The film preserves the basic friends-to-lovers arc and the recurring vacations, but compresses and changes parts of the story. One clear example is the destination wedding: the novel’s Palm Springs event becomes a Barcelona wedding in the film. Netflix’s adaptation feature says the choice reflected author approval as well as production logistics. The film also handles the ending differently and includes a visual epilogue that recreates the novel’s cover; TIME’s comparison catalogs further differences.

These choices matter less as a checklist of fidelity than as decisions about pacing and atmosphere. A feature film has less room than a novel to linger across a decade of friendship, and travel locations help create the story’s holiday mood. Viewers comparing the versions may want to consider whether the leads’ chemistry, the emotional beats, the compression, or the sense of place matters most to them. The changes are neither proof that the film improves on the book nor a reason every reader will reject it.
Is the film worth watching?
For viewers looking for a light romantic story built around a central pair, the performances make a persuasive case. The movie’s visual style is familiar and its ambitions are modest, reservations noted in TechRadar’s review. Its appeal rests more on the leads and the vacation-romance premise than on formal surprises. Calling it “irresistible” is a critical judgment, not a universal verdict; the adaptation’s charms will depend on how much a viewer enjoys its performances and its changes from Henry’s book.
