Hilary Knight and Megan Keller drew a loud, lengthy ovation when they appeared on Saturday Night Live on March 1, 2026. Knight’s punchline—“It was going to be just us, but we thought we’d invite the guys, too”—referenced the week’s controversy over President Donald Trump’s invitation to the U.S. men’s hockey team and his remark that he would also have to invite the women.
What happened on SNL?
U.S. women’s hockey captain Hilary Knight and teammate Megan Keller joined U.S. men’s players Jack and Quinn Hughes during host Connor Storrie’s opening monologue. It was a brief cameo in the monologue, not a full sketch led by the hockey players. The Associated Press described the women’s entrance as receiving “a loud and lengthy ovation.” Associated Press coverage of the episode
Knight delivered the line that made the moment a pointed callback: “It was going to be just us, but we thought we’d invite the guys, too.” The joke turned the controversy’s language of invitations around, with the women welcoming the men into the moment.
Why was the joke a callback to Trump?
Both U.S. hockey teams had just won Olympic gold at Milano Cortina 2026. After the men defeated Canada in overtime, 2-1, Trump called to congratulate them and invited the team to attend the State of the Union. He added that he would also have to invite the women’s team. The remark drew laughter from some players and criticism from others watching the exchange. Associated Press report on the call and invitation

Why did the women’s team decline the State of the Union invitation?
The team said timing and previously scheduled academic and professional commitments prevented its members from attending. Later, player Kelly Pannek reiterated that logistical challenges explained the absence. What the SNL moment does—and does not—show
Knight’s line responded to a specific public exchange with a concise joke. It should not be read as a statement of every athlete’s private view or as evidence that the whole team shared one position. The cameo’s impact came from timing: a week of discussion about the postgame call and invitation became a punchline in front of a live studio audience.
