The headline refers to Saturday Night Live’s April 12, 2025 Easter cold open, in which James Austin Johnson’s Trump character compared the stock market’s fall, brief recovery and renewed decline to Jesus’s death and resurrection. Mikey Day played Jesus in the sketch. The line was political satire about tariff-related economic turbulence—not market analysis or a statement by Donald Trump.
What was the stock-market joke?
Johnson’s Trump character interrupts an Easter tableau and says: “It’s true, the stock market did a Jesus. It died, then on the third day it was risen. And then on a fourth day, it died again, possibly never to return. Just like Jesus.” Fox News and The Independent reported the line after the episode aired.
The joke turns a biblical sequence into a market metaphor: a sharp drop is the death, a short-lived rebound is the resurrection, and another decline is the second death. Its exaggerated ending—“possibly never to return”—is part of the punchline, not a forecast.
How the Easter sketch set up the satire
The cold open begins with Mikey Day playing Jesus in a temple-cleansing scene. The cast freezes as Johnson’s Trump enters and takes over the moment with a political monologue, shifting the sketch from biblical staging to current-affairs comedy. The Atlantic and Salon describe the staging and the tariff-focused jokes.

The sketch also builds a pun around “Messiah”: “Many people are calling me the Messiah,” Johnson’s character says, then adds, “Because of the mess-I-ah made out of the economy.” The joke makes the supposed savior responsible for the “mess” in the economy, using religious language to sharpen the political criticism. These are lines spoken by a fictional Trump in a sketch, not remarks from Trump himself.
What economic events was it mocking?
Contemporary coverage connected the cold open to market turmoil around Trump’s tariff announcements and the temporary pause on many tariffs. The sketch treated that unsettled sequence as comic material; the reporting does not establish that any one policy alone caused a particular market move. The market comparison should therefore be understood as a satirical framing, not a verified account of market causation.

Egg-price jokes made the economic theme tangible in the Easter setting. Fox News and The Atlantic also placed the cold open among other tariff-related material in the episode, including the pretaped “White Potus” parody and a Lizzo performance that referenced tariffs.

This is the April 12, 2025 episode, hosted by Jon Hamm with Lizzo as musical guest, as reported by The Independent. It is distinct from a separate 2023 Easter cold open that also featured Johnson’s Trump comparing himself to Jesus. The nonofficial SNL Transcripts Tonight transcript archive identifies Mikey Day as Jesus and Molly Kearney as Judas in the 2023 sketch; that transcript does not contain the 2025 “stock market did a Jesus” line.
