Rush Hour 4 is a reported project, but it does not yet have a confirmed release date or a fully settled production schedule. Paramount is reported to be attached for theatrical distribution, with Brett Ratner expected to direct and Jackie Chan and Chris Tucker expected to reunite. The latest dated reporting reviewed here leaves key questions open, including whether the two stars have signed deals and when filming will begin.
Is Rush Hour 4 happening?
Yes—as a project described in news reports, not as a production whose schedule and contracts are all publicly confirmed. The Associated Press reported on November 26, 2025, that Paramount was in closing talks to distribute the film. AP’s report said Paramount would receive a distribution fee rather than finance the movie. Variety likewise described Paramount’s role as theatrical distribution and reported that Warner Bros. would retain a financial and rights role.
Those arrangements were reported by the outlets, partly on the basis of sources; they are not a substitute for a public studio announcement setting out the completed deal. The reporting also does not establish a release date, final cast list, trailer date, theatrical territories or streaming and home-video destination.
Who is expected to return?
Variety reported that director Brett Ratner and original stars Jackie Chan and Chris Tucker were expected to return. AP also described the project as reuniting Chan and Tucker. The careful wording is “expected” or “reported to return”: the April 2026 production account said the actors’ deals were still unresolved at that point.

Chan previously joked about the urgency of making another film in remarks quoted by ComicBook.com from a ScreenRant interview: “I don’t know. Ask the director, ask the studio, ask the writer. Hurry up,” he said. “Otherwise, Chris Tucker and me [will be] 100 years old. We’ll be old men doing Rush Hour.” ComicBook.com’s May 2025 account relayed the quote; it is not an announcement of a production date or contract.
When will Rush Hour 4 come out?
No confirmed theatrical release date appears in the sources reviewed. In November 2025, Variety said the timeline was unclear. Later reports discussed possible production timing, but a prospective filming window is not a release-date announcement.

What the production reports say
- April 24, 2026: Puck reported that a planned spring or summer shoot had slipped to September at the earliest. It also reported that financing and deals with Chan and Tucker remained unresolved. Puck’s figures and contract details are attributed reporting, not official studio disclosures. Read Puck’s report.
- October 2, 2026: The Film & Television Industry Alliance’s Production List entry labels the project “In Production” and lists an August 2026 shoot date. But its summary says pre-production and describes a September start. These conflicting fields do not establish that principal photography has begun.
The reports therefore do not support a precise prediction of when the film will reach cinemas. A start date in a listing or a target described by a publication can change, and neither resolves the production-status conflict.
Where might the film shoot?
China has been described as a planned location, not a confirmed completed shoot. The Washington Post reported on May 12, 2026, that Ratner spokeswoman Victoria Palmer-Moore said he planned to film “a lot” of the movie there. Production List also lists Saudi Arabia, while its schedule information conflicts internally. Treat both destinations as reported plans rather than proof that filming took place there.

How does the fourth film fit the franchise?
The existing series consists of Rush Hour (1998), Rush Hour 2 (2001) and Rush Hour 3 (2007), according to AP. The original pairs two police officers who must work together to rescue a Chinese diplomat’s abducted daughter, as Variety describes it.
| Film | Release year | Worldwide gross reported by Variety |
|---|---|---|
| Rush Hour | 1998 | $244 million |
| Rush Hour 2 | 2001 | $347 million |
| Rush Hour 3 | 2007 | $258 million |
These are worldwide box-office figures reported by Variety in 2025; they are not inflation-adjusted. They provide franchise history, not a measure of present-day audience demand.

What remains unknown?
- A confirmed theatrical release date and final shooting schedule.
- Whether Chan and Tucker have signed contracts and what the final cast will be.
- When a trailer might arrive, which territories will receive a theatrical release, and where the film will stream or be available for home viewing.
There is also a sensitive part of Ratner’s history relevant to the revival. AP reported that six women accused him of sexual harassment in a 2017 Los Angeles Times report; Ratner denied the allegations. Those are allegations and a denial, not adjudicated findings. AP also attributed the political-pressure angle to Semafor, which reported that Donald Trump personally asked Paramount to take on the film; the White House did not immediately comment at the time of AP’s report.
