NCIS: Hawai‘i was canceled by CBS after three seasons, with the decision announced on April 26, 2024. Its third season became its last, and the series finale aired May 6, 2024. CBS cited broad scheduling and business considerations, but did not publish a single, specific cause for the cancellation.
Why did CBS cancel NCIS: Hawai‘i?
Amy Reisenbach, then CBS Entertainment president, described the decision as part of difficult choices involving the network’s schedule, finances, and the show’s overall performance. Speaking to TVLine, she said: “It is incumbent on us to always keep the schedule fresh, keep momentum going. We had to make some really tough choices this year.” TVLine’s May 2, 2024 account also attributed schedule cohesion, financials, and overall performance to her explanation.

CBS did not release a detailed formula showing how much any one factor counted. The public explanation therefore does not support saying the series was canceled solely because of ratings, production costs, or any other single issue.
What do the ratings figures show?
TVLine reported that, season-to-date as of May 2, 2024, NCIS: Hawai‘i averaged 7.8 million total viewers and a 0.5 rating in the key demo on a Live+7 basis. The outlet said total viewership was up 4% from Season 2, while the demo rating was down by one tenth. These are dated figures using a specific viewing window, not current ratings or proof of the precise reason CBS canceled the show. TVLine reported the figures alongside Reisenbach’s comments.

Was the cancellation planned, and how did the series end?
The third season was not made as a final season following a known renewal decision. Co-showrunners Jan Nash, Christopher Silber, and Matt Bosack later said they had been surprised by the cancellation. In a joint interview published July 26, 2024, they said: “We were obviously surprised. If we’d known it was coming, we probably wouldn’t have ended the series on a cliffhanger.” Their comments and discussion of ideas for a possible fourth season describe unrealized possibilities, not confirmed storylines or produced episodes. TVLine’s interview has their retrospective account.
Vanessa Lachey, who played special agent-in-charge Jane Tennant, also expressed regret that the cast and crew did not have more time or a proper goodbye. She told TVLine: “I wish we had more time, I’m sorry we don’t. I wish we had a proper good-bye, I’m sorry we didn’t.” TVLine reported her response on May 1, 2024.
