Roy Black, the prominent criminal-defense attorney and husband of The Real Housewives of Miami alum Lea Black, died at his home in Coral Gables, Florida, on July 21, 2025. He was 80. The Miami Herald reported that he had been battling an illness; it did not identify a specific cause of death.
Who was Roy Black?
Black was a Miami-based criminal-defense attorney known for representing clients in high-profile cases. His best-known cases included the 1991 defense of William Kennedy Smith, who was acquitted. In 2022, Black successfully defended Amin Khoury in the Varsity Blues investigation, according to the Miami Herald.
Black’s law partner, Howard Srebnick, praised him as “the greatest criminal lawyer of our generation, perhaps in American history.” That was Srebnick’s assessment of his partner’s career, not a measurable ranking.
How was Roy Black connected to Lea Black and RHOM?
Roy and Lea Black married in 1994. Lea had served on the jury in the William Kennedy Smith trial three years earlier, and the couple’s relationship developed in its aftermath, the Herald reported. Lea later became a cast member of The Real Housewives of Miami.
