Spoilers ahead for “The Before Times,” the Season 2 premiere of Matlock.
“The Before Times” aired October 12, 2025, and puts Matty and Olympia’s uneasy work-family bond under strain: both want the truth about Wellbrexa exposed, but they disagree over what to reveal and whom to protect. The premiere also revisits Joey’s claim that he is Alfie’s father and gives the team an arson case.
What happens in “The Before Times”?
The Season 2 opener resumes the question hanging over the end of Season 1: whether Joey, the man claiming to be Alfie’s father, is telling the truth. At the same time, the Wellbrexa dispute keeps Matty and Olympia on opposing sides of a consequential choice, even as they remain colleagues pursuing the larger truth.
CBS’s episode guide summarizes the episode this way: “Matty questions the paternity of the man claiming to be Alfie’s father. Also, the team takes on an arson case while Olympia tries to protect Julian’s involvement in the Wellbrexa case.” The arson matter is part of the premiere, but CBS’s synopsis does not give further procedural details.

Why are Matty and Olympia fighting over Wellbrexa?
Their conflict is less about whether the Wellbrexa evidence matters than what to do with it. According to TVLine’s October 12 recap, Olympia knows Julian concealed crucial documents, but keeps that information from Matty because she is trying to protect Julian’s role. Matty, meanwhile, is determined to take the information to the press even if Julian is implicated.
That is where the episode’s “work family” tension lands: the women are still working toward a shared larger objective, but they withhold consequential information from each other and protect different people. Their bond has not disappeared; it is being tested by the choices they make on the case.

Spoilers: Is Joey really Alfie’s father?
Major spoiler: Yes. TV Insider’s recap reports that Joey is Alfie’s biological father. Matty tests Joey’s DNA, and the test also detects signs of drug use, confirming that he is not sober. The result changes the family situation Matty and Edwin must navigate.
What happens to the Wellbrexa dispute next?
The disagreement does not end with the premiere. CBS lists “Another Matlock” as the next episode, dated October 16, 2025. Its synopsis says the team protects a witness while Matty and Olympia square off over the Wellbrexa document; Matty and Edwin also consider whether to help Alfie’s father.
