Spoilers for all six episodes of Maxton Hall Season 2. Ruby Bell is suspended after Mortimer Beaufort frames her as having an affair with teacher Graham Sutton. The finale does not show Ruby expelled or cleared, and it leaves her Oxford future in jeopardy. Ruby and James are still together—but she does not know James took the photograph Mortimer uses against her.
Why is Ruby accused of having an affair with Sutton?
Mortimer uses an old compromising photograph taken by James in Season 1 to make it appear that Ruby is involved with Sutton. The accusation is a frame-up: Sutton is actually preparing to disclose his relationship with Lydia Beaufort, not Ruby. Mortimer redirects the scandal toward Ruby, putting her scholarship and her family’s security at risk.

Ruby does not expose Lydia to defend herself. That choice leaves her facing the accusation while protecting Lydia’s secret. Actress Harriet Herbig-Matten said Ruby does not understand what is happening in the moment; she also described Ruby’s refusal to betray Lydia as part of what makes her character admirable. The Hollywood Reporter’s interview with Herbig-Matten discusses the finale and Ruby’s response.
Does Ruby get expelled or lose her Oxford place?
Neither outcome is confirmed in the Season 2 finale. Ruby is suspended, but the show does not establish that she has been expelled or cleared. Her Oxford plans are threatened; the episode does not say that she has lost her place. Whether she can prove the photograph was used to frame her—and protect her Oxford opportunity—is left open.

Are Ruby and James still together?
Yes. After James spirals following his mother Cordelia’s death, pushes Ruby away, and is unfaithful, Ruby ends the relationship rather than take responsibility for fixing him. James begins therapy and works on his destructive behavior. At a mental-health charity benefit, he speaks about his struggles and stands up to his father. Ruby and James gradually reconcile, choose to be open about their relationship, and end the season together, ready to face Mortimer.
There is an important complication: Ruby does not know James took the photograph Mortimer uses. The finale leaves that fact—and what it could mean for their relationship—unresolved.
What does the ending leave unresolved?
- Ruby’s school status: She is suspended, with no final decision on expulsion or reinstatement.
- Oxford: Her future there is at risk, but the finale does not confirm she has lost her opportunity.
- The photograph: Mortimer uses James’s old picture to frame Ruby, and Ruby does not know James took it.
- Percy’s possible connection to James: The closing imagery linking Percy, Cordelia, and James invites speculation that Percy could be James and Lydia’s biological father. It is not a confirmed reveal.
Director Martin Schreier said he wanted viewers to finish the season wanting to know what happens next. The cliffhanger is deliberate, not a resolution of Ruby’s accusation.
