Red One draws on two real folklore traditions—but its Grýla and Krampus are fictional versions, not evidence that supernatural beings exist. Grýla comes from Icelandic folklore; Krampus is associated especially with German-speaking Alpine regions. The film’s former-lovers backstory is its own invention, not a shared traditional legend.
Are Grýla and Krampus real?
They are real as figures in folklore and cultural tradition, not as verified supernatural beings. Their origins are distinct: Grýla belongs to Icelandic tradition, while Krampus is especially associated with Austria and southern Germany and neighboring regions. Red One brings them together in a fictional Christmas action story.
Who is Grýla in Icelandic folklore?
Grýla is an ogress associated with frightening or taking misbehaving children. In familiar later versions of Icelandic Christmas folklore, she is the mother of the Yule Lads. Those characters’ roles have changed over time: Smithsonian describes the Yule Lads’ shift from frightening or disruptive figures toward more benign gift-bringers.
Grýla’s written history and her Christmas association are separate parts of the timeline. Smithsonian reports references to her in 13th-century sagas and poems, but says she was not directly linked to Christmas then. Poems began making that connection around the early 19th century. University of Iceland folklorist Terry Gunnell told Smithsonian: “She was certainly around in about 1300, not directly associated with Christmas, but associated with a threat that lives in the mountains. You never knew exactly where she was.”

In 1746, Icelandic authorities issued a decree prohibiting parents from using the Yule Lads and similarly frightening stories to scare children into submission. It did not ban Icelandic folklore or public performances. Illustrator Brian Pilkington, whose work has helped shape modern depictions of these characters, called the tradition “living folklore.”
Who is Krampus, and where is the tradition found?
Krampus is a frightening companion to Saint Nicholas in many local customs. The Library of Congress describes the tradition as especially associated with Austria’s Styria and Salzburg and Germany’s Bavaria, as well as neighboring regions and communities. In a common pattern, Saint Nicholas visits children on December 5 or 6: he rewards the well-behaved, while Krampus threatens or punishes those who misbehave. Customs differ from place to place, including whether “Krampus” means one figure or a broader type of figure.

Claims that Krampus is definitively an ancient pagan deity should be treated cautiously. The Library of Congress says popular claims of a pre-Christian origin lack support in the sources they cite, and points to medieval art and drama as clearer historical evidence for the recognizable tradition. That account does not establish one exact origin for every local custom.
How does Red One change the legends?
The film gives Grýla and Krampus a shared story: its screenplay depicts them as former lovers whose conflict is tied to the movie’s plot. That relationship and plot are adaptation choices, not part of the traditional accounts described above. The fact that both characters have folkloric roots does not make the film’s shared backstory folklore.

Why the distinction matters
Folklore is not a fixed script. Characters and customs can change over generations, as the shifting Yule Lads illustrate. A modern screen story can bring separate figures together without turning its inventions into part of either tradition. For Red One, the useful distinction is simple: Grýla and Krampus are traditional characters; their supernatural powers and relationship in the movie belong to fiction.
