MaXXXine takes the adult-film performer Maxine Minx from the world of X into 1980s Hollywood, where she is chasing a mainstream acting role as a killer stalks starlets and threatens to expose her past. The third film in Ti West’s trilogy is a horror story about ambition and danger, but also a movie about the industries that turn women into images—and judge them for the images they make.
What is MaXXXine about?
Set in 1985, the film follows Maxine Minx (Mia Goth), an adult-film performer who wants to become a mainstream actor. She gets the opportunity to audition for a major role just as a killer is targeting Hollywood starlets. As the danger closes in, her past becomes another threat to the future she is trying to build. Written and directed by Ti West, MaXXXine runs 1 hour 41 minutes and is rated R for gore, drug use, strong violence, graphic nudity, language and sexual content, according to Rotten Tomatoes’ title listing.
How does it fit into the X trilogy?
MaXXXine is the third film in West’s trilogy, following X (2022) and Pearl (2022). The movies move through distinct settings and styles, while returning to questions of fame, performance and who gets to control a woman’s image.

The progression is more than a change of backdrop: the trilogy moves from making a film, to dreaming of stardom, to confronting Hollywood’s machinery from inside it. The British Film Institute describes MaXXXine as a knowing homage to the horror Maxine wants to enter and a tour through a seedier side of Los Angeles. That is a useful way to understand its place in the series, though the trilogy’s stylistic contrasts are interpretive rather than a formula the films simply repeat.
Why is the film set in the 1980s?
West told the British Film Institute that moving Maxine to Hollywood was the logical next step after her goal in X was to become a star. He chose the 1980s for what he called an “appropriately excessive” era for the film industry and horror, pointing to the peak of VHS and the kinds of movies being made. He placed the story in summer 1985, against the backdrop of a real-life serial killer and public moral outrage about music, movies and censorship. That is West’s stated rationale, not a claim that one horror film captures the decade in full.

The period also lets the film put different kinds of entertainment under the same suspicious gaze. In an interview with The Guardian, West described the movie as “essentially a movie about making movies” and recalled that heavy-metal fans he knew growing up could be treated as if their music made them evil. In MaXXXine, that wider climate of suspicion surrounds popular culture even as Hollywood profits from selling shock, glamour and danger.
What is the film saying about porn, horror and Hollywood?
One critical reading is that MaXXXine treats adult entertainment, mainstream filmmaking and horror as overlapping industries that make money from images of women while drawing boundaries around which women can be accepted. Maxine wants to cross from porn into mainstream acting, but the distinction between the supposedly respectable industry and its less respectable counterpart looks unstable when both depend on performance, publicity and audience appetite.

Variety reads the film as an explicit homage to 1980s sexploitation thrillers that also traces connections between low-budget and mainstream Hollywood, the sex industry and gendered power. The film’s line “B-movie with A ideas,” spoken by Elizabeth Bender (Elizabeth Debicki), offers a neat description of that ambition: genre excess carries ideas about who gets to make images and who is judged by them. It is a critical interpretation, not a guarantee that every viewer will find the commentary as forceful as the pastiche.
What kind of horror movie is it?
MaXXXine uses the look and conventions of 1980s horror to place Maxine’s Hollywood ascent inside a world of menace and spectacle. Its interests are not limited to the killer’s threat: the story also makes Maxine’s ambition, the entertainment business and the circulation of images part of the horror. Viewers looking for a straightforward slasher may find the film’s industry-focused concerns equally important to its genre thrills.

The film’s R rating reflects its explicit material: gore, drug use, strong violence, graphic nudity, language and sexual content. It is not a light or all-ages entry in the trilogy.
