Kalki 2898 AD is a Telugu-language science-fiction epic set in a future shaped by authoritarian rule, prophecy and a city with a long history. Its central setup gives the spectacle a human route into that world: a bounty hunter becomes entangled in the fate of a captive carrying the child associated with Kalki. The film is worth considering for viewers drawn to expansive world-building, though its substantial runtime makes it a commitment.
What is Kalki 2898 AD about?
The official Japanese film site places the story in 2898, in Kashi under the rule of Supreme Yaskin and a floating complex. Sumathi is held captive while carrying the child associated with Kalki. Bhairava, a bounty hunter played by Prabhas, becomes involved in the conflict surrounding her. The setup joins a far-future science-fiction setting to the figure of Kalki, with Bhairava and Sumathi’s predicament providing the story’s central human stakes. Official Japanese film site

Does its world make it worth watching?
The premise’s strongest draw is the scale of the setting: a far-future version of Kashi, a ruling power centered on a floating complex, and a conflict tied to a prophesied child. That combination gives the film a distinct world to explore rather than a generic backdrop for action. Viewers who enjoy science fiction built around elaborate settings and mythic stakes have a clear reason to give it a look.

Whether that ambition translates into persuasive effects, action, performances or pacing is a matter of the individual viewing experience; the premise alone cannot settle those questions. The practical trade-off is time: the Japanese official site lists runtimes of 168 minutes for 2D and 180 minutes for IMAX. Those are version-specific Japanese release details, not a universal runtime. Official Japanese film site
