Sony lists its U.S. theatrical release for December 25, 2026. The update’s bittersweet edge comes from that finale framing—and from a reported tribute to original star Robin Williams during filming.
When does Jumanji: Open World come out?
Sony lists JUMANJI: OPEN WORLD for U.S. theatrical release on December 25, 2026. That is the current date in Sony’s August 4, 2026 announcement and on Sony’s current homepage. An earlier date of December 11, 2026, has been superseded.
Sony’s official materials also confirm the title and describe the film as the final chapter of the action-adventure series. Its official film website carries the movie’s branding and a prompt to register interest in tickets; it does not establish that tickets are already on sale.
Why is the update bittersweet?
The clearest reason is Sony’s description of the film as the series’ final chapter: the returning cast’s next adventure is being presented as the franchise’s last. The other emotional note comes from a reported filming tribute to Robin Williams, star of the 1995 Jumanji.

What is the new Jumanji movie about?
Sony’s central story hook is that the game escapes its console and brings Jumanji into the real world. The premise shifts the danger beyond the game’s usual boundaries; Sony describes the result as chaos entering our world. The announcement does not provide further plot details.

What “filming begins” means in this update
“Filming begins” was the framing of an earlier production update, not a current breaking-news claim. Sony’s later announcement establishes the film’s official title, premise, credits, finale framing, and U.S. release date. It does not give a current production-status update, so the meaningful new information is the film’s confirmed identity and planned release—not a claim that filming is starting now.
