The suspension lasted less than a week: Disney announced on September 22 that the show would return the next day, and it resumed on ABC on September 23. Nexstar and Sinclair, two large affiliate groups that had also preempted the program, announced on September 26 that they would resume airing it.
Why did ABC pull Jimmy Kimmel off the air?
ABC announced the indefinite preemption after Kimmel made comments about Charlie Kirk’s death. Before ABC’s announcement, FCC Chair Brendan Carr had publicly called for Kimmel’s suspension, ABC News reported. That establishes the sequence of events, but the available reporting does not independently establish the private decision-making chain behind ABC’s choice.

Disney later described the suspension as an effort “to avoid further inflaming a tense situation at an emotional moment for our country.” The company also said it considered some of Kimmel’s comments “ill-timed and thus insensitive.” Those were Disney’s stated reasons; they should not be conflated with the separate public pressure from Carr or the affiliate groups’ decisions.
When did the show return to ABC?
Disney announced on September 22, 2025, that the program would return Tuesday, September 23. In a statement quoted by ABC News, the company said it had held “thoughtful conversations with Jimmy” before reaching the decision to bring the show back. Kimmel’s first monologue after the preemption addressed his earlier comments and defended free speech, ABC News reported.

Did Nexstar and Sinclair resume airing the show?
Yes. On September 26, 2025, Nexstar and Sinclair announced they were ending their preemptions and returning the program to their ABC affiliates that evening. ABC News reported that the two groups owned around 60 ABC affiliate stations combined, attributing that approximate figure to the companies’ websites. That count does not establish the exact carriage status of the show at every station or in every market.
Sinclair said its decision to preempt the program had been “independent of any government interaction or influence.” That is the company’s account of its decision. Sinclair also described proposals involving accountability, viewer feedback and an independent network-wide ombudsman.
Was the 2025 preemption a cancellation?
No. The indefinite wording described ABC’s initial September 17 announcement, not the eventual length of the interruption: Disney announced the return on September 22, and the show was back on ABC on September 23. Affiliate preemptions continued at Nexstar and Sinclair stations until those groups announced their reversals on September 26.

A separate October 1, 2026, report by The Daily Beast described the show’s future as unclear and reported that Kimmel’s contract had not been renewed beyond May 2027. The article quoted Disney president and chief creative officer Dana Walden calling late night “a very challenging daypart.” She also said Kimmel was doing a “phenomenal job” and that his ratings were up relative to a smaller audience watching late-night broadcast television.
Rank #3
That report concerns a later contract and business question, not a continuation of the 2025 preemption. It is not an official cancellation announcement, and the report alone does not establish what Disney will decide about renewal.
