The title refers to Saturday Night Live’s December 6, 2025 cold open: a fictional press conference about U.S. strikes on boats near Venezuela, with Colin Jost playing Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth and James Austin Johnson playing President Donald Trump. The sketch satirized the strikes and the disputes around them; its dialogue is comedy, not a record of what officials said or ordered.
What was the SNL cold open about?
As described in retrospective coverage by TV Insider and The Independent, the sketch stages Hegseth at a press conference addressing the boat strikes, with Trump appearing alongside him. Jost and Johnson portray the two officials. The premise turns a real, contested military campaign into political satire.
Any lines, explanations or scenarios delivered in the sketch belong to its fictional characters. They should not be quoted as genuine remarks by Hegseth or Trump, or treated as evidence about the operation. The exact official NBC page for this December sketch was not confirmed in the coverage reviewed, so this account summarizes reported descriptions rather than presenting a verified transcript.
Which SNL sketch does the title refer to?
It is the December 6, 2025 cold open, not the separate season-premiere sketch from October 4, 2025. That earlier cold open also mocked Hegseth, but in connection with his speech to senior military officials at Quantico. The two sketches have different occasions and should not be conflated.

What happened in the Venezuela boat strikes?
The real-world backdrop was a series of U.S. strikes on boats near Venezuela that the Trump administration publicly characterized as connected to drug trafficking. The Associated Press reported on October 14, 2025, that a U.S. strike near Venezuela killed six people, citing Trump’s announcement. AP described that incident as the fifth deadly strike in the Caribbean at that time. Its October 21 timeline tracked subsequent strikes and the military buildup.
Those are dated reports, not a current tally. For the October 14 account, see AP’s report on the strike; for developments through October 21, see AP’s timeline. The administration’s characterization of the boats is an official claim; the reported deaths and dated strike count are separate facts and should not be used to imply that every allegation about those aboard was independently established.

Why was the campaign’s legality disputed?
Lawmakers questioned the legal basis for the strikes and the circumstances in which lethal force was used. A Senate Democratic committee letter and statements in the Congressional Record document those objections. They show a political and legal dispute, not a final court ruling on the campaign.
In AP’s October 21 timeline, Sen. Jack Reed argued that the military is not “empowered to hunt down suspected criminals and kill them without trial.” That is Reed’s criticism, quoted by AP, rather than a judicial finding. The administration’s public account and lawmakers’ objections should therefore be attributed to their respective speakers, not presented as settled legal conclusions.

What the sketch can—and cannot—tell viewers
- It can: show how the strikes and their public controversy became material for political comedy, through reported portrayals of Hegseth and Trump.
- It cannot: establish what happened during a particular strike, verify the administration’s allegations about a boat, or settle whether the campaign was lawful.
- For the underlying story: use dated reporting for operational developments and attribute legal arguments to the officials or lawmakers making them.
