The March 2, 2024, Saturday Night Live “Weekend Update” clip pairs jokes about Donald Trump’s visit to the southern border with a punchline about Mitch McConnell leaving his post as Senate Republican leader. It is a snapshot of that week’s news—not a current update on either man.
Which ‘Weekend Update’ clip is this?
The official SNL clip, published March 2, 2024, is titled “Trump and Biden Visit Southern Border, McConnell to Step Down.” SNL describes Weekend Update as its weekly headline segment, anchored by Colin Jost and Michael Che. Watch the official SNL clip on YouTube.
What was the joke about Trump waving at migrants?
The segment riffed on Trump’s border visit and his wave toward people across the river. CNN’s March 3 transcript reports a joke imagining migrants interpreting the gesture as an invitation to enter the United States: “They just walked 1000 miles to get to the edge of this river and they’re probably thinking is that weirdo and a Trump costume waving us into the country?” CNN attributes this line to an unidentified male voice in the clip, so it should not be assigned to Jost or Che on the basis of the transcript alone. The imagined reaction is part of the joke, not evidence of what migrants thought or what Trump intended.
What did Jost say about McConnell stepping down?
McConnell had announced he would leave the Senate Republican leadership role at the end of 2024. In the joke reported by CNN, Jost said his replacement would be “the current number two Republican in the Senate a frozen embryo holding an assault rifle.” The line is satire about the succession and the political climate; it does not identify McConnell’s actual successor. CNN’s transcript reports the wording, though its punctuation may not capture the live delivery exactly.

What the clip covers—and what it doesn’t
The two jokes take aim at separate events in the week’s headlines: Trump’s border visit and McConnell’s planned departure from party leadership. SNL’s listing establishes the clip’s subject and anchors; CNN’s transcript provides the reported lines. Neither source makes the segment a factual account of migrants’ views or a forecast of Senate leadership. The available transcript excerpts also do not establish the full verbatim segment or the clip’s precise edit boundaries.
