People Magazine Investigates poses the question in its season 7, episode 3 title, “Where is Mark Himebaugh?” The episode revisits the disappearance of 11-year-old Mark in November 1991, after he left home to see a nearby brush fire. The case remains unresolved in the public case listing cited below; the available sources do not establish what happened to him.

What happened to Mark Himebaugh?

Apple TV’s U.S. episode synopsis says Mark left home to look at a nearby brush fire in November 1991 and disappeared. It does not provide a confirmed explanation for his disappearance. The synopsis also promotes the possibility of secrets in the family and town; that is the program’s framing, not evidence that any named person committed a crime.

A third-party case page identifies the missing person as Marc Joseph Himebaugh, names Middle Township Police Department as the investigating agency, and describes the case as unresolved. Neither that listing nor the episode metadata establishes what happened to Mark or supports accusing a particular person.

What is publicly reported about the investigation?

Solve the Case’s page for Marc Joseph Himebaugh reports that Middle Township Police and the Cape May Prosecutor’s Office began using artificial intelligence on the case in May 2022. This is a third-party report, not an independently confirmed agency statement in the sources available here. It does not say what the tool did or whether it produced useful leads.

The page, last updated September 4, 2026, also displays public tasks concerning dental records, family contact, a lead investigator, an NCIC entry, a NamUs entry, and a family DNA submission. These are requests shown on that site; they do not confirm whether a person completed any of those actions or establish the current status of official records. Solve the Case’s listing is the source for those reported details.

What NamUs can—and cannot—tell readers about this case

NamUs, a National Institute of Justice program, provides a national database and forensic services for missing and unidentified persons. Its general guidance says family DNA profiles are used to compare against unidentified persons or remains, not searched against offender or unknown-suspect profiles. That describes NamUs policy; it does not show that the Himebaugh family submitted DNA or that NamUs is handling Mark’s case. See NamUs’ frequently asked questions.

NamUs also reports, citing FBI NCIC, an annual average of 532,727 missing-person records entered into NCIC from 2021 through 2025. That national figure is background only, not a statistic about Mark’s disappearance.
