P.I. Moms, a planned Lifetime reality series about women working as private investigators in the San Francisco Bay Area, never aired. In Netflix’s 2025 documentary Trainwreck: P.I. Moms, the show’s participants and showrunner accuse actor and former law-enforcement agent Carl Marino of undermining the production by seeking a larger on-camera role and tipping off a target during a filmed operation. Marino later cooperated with authorities in a sting involving agency owner Chris Butler. The production’s end, however, was also tied to the criminal investigation of Butler—not to a single uncontested cause.
What did Carl Marino do to P.I. Moms?
According to showrunner Lucas Platt and the women featured in the series, Marino wanted to become a main character and later tipped off the target of a planned operation being filmed for the show. TIME’s 2025 account of the story says Platt investigated the leak and identified Marino as the tipster. These are participants’ and the documentary’s accounts of what happened during production, not a court finding about the television series.
Platt said Marino asked for a bigger role before filming, arguing his acting experience could help attract female viewers. Platt’s response, as quoted by TIME, was: “Its called P.I. Moms, and he’s not a mom.” Platt says the concept and Lifetime’s decision to make the show centered on Butler and the women investigators.
The planned operation involved investigator Denise Antoon. During it, the target told her he had been tipped off. Antoon later described the fallout this way: “Chris and Carl just took it away from everybody,” adding, “They put their desires above everyone else’s.” Ami Wiltz also criticized Marino’s ambition, asking, “How dumb are you that they’re going to push this out and you’re going to be the star of the show?” TIME attributes these remarks to the participants’ recollections in the documentary.

How the production became entangled in the Butler investigation
The production’s problems extended beyond the alleged leak. TIME recounts that journalist Peter Crooks received anonymous information about staged cases and alleged criminal conduct at Butler & Associates. According to that retrospective, Marino was behind messages sent under the name Ronald Rutherford and shared information about Butler’s activities. This reporting describes how the allegations came to light; it does not make the production dispute itself a court-established fact.
Marino later agreed to wear a wire in a law-enforcement operation involving Butler. A 2012 announcement from Paramount Press Express said Marino described risking his life in the sting. TIME’s account says authorities arranged a drug buy at Butler’s firm and arrested him. Lifetime canceled P.I. Moms before it aired.

The cancellation and the sting are connected by the people and events involved, but they should not be reduced to a claim that Marino’s cooperation with authorities alone destroyed the show. The alleged tip-off and role dispute are one part of the account; the criminal investigation into Butler created a separate and serious threat to the production.
What happened to Chris Butler?
Paramount’s contemporaneous 2012 announcement said the investigation had produced 17 federal charges. That figure describes the charges reported at the time, not the eventual plea or sentence. TIME’s 2025 retrospective reports that Butler pleaded guilty on May 4, 2012, to selling drugs, extortion, robbery and planting illegal wiretaps, and received an eight-year prison sentence. Those later reported outcomes should be kept distinct from the earlier charge count.

What was P.I. Moms supposed to be?
Butler & Associates employed the four women featured as investigators: Michelle Allen, Charmagne Peters, Denise Antoon and Ami Wiltz. Marino, a former law-enforcement agent pursuing acting work, was also connected to the firm. TIME reports the planned Lifetime production had three camera crews and a $4 million budget for eight episodes. Those are production details reported in TIME’s account of the documentary, not independently verified budget records.
The series never reached broadcast. Netflix’s 2025 documentary Trainwreck: P.I. Moms revisits the planned show, the allegations about the leak and role dispute, and the criminal case involving Butler. Netflix catalog availability can change by country and date, so the documentary’s present availability depends on the viewer’s region.

- The sting: Paramount’s 2012 statement and TIME’s later account describe Marino’s cooperation with authorities in the operation involving Butler.
- Criminal outcome: TIME reports Butler’s guilty plea and eight-year sentence; Paramount’s announcement gives the earlier figure of 17 federal charges.
