Season 2 resolves the cliffhangers: Robert survives, and Douglas is the father of Mitzi’s baby.
Who is Norma really?
At the Beach Ball, Ann’s presentation about Norma gives Robert a reason to question the woman he knows. A former lover’s account of Norma’s boarding-school years helps Robert connect the clues: the woman living as Norma is Agnes, Norma’s diabetic roommate. Agnes apparently assumed Norma’s identity after the real Norma died in a fall.

The discovery changes Robert’s response to Norma’s marriage proposal. She had offered marriage as a route to the Dellacorte fortune, but once Robert understands the deception, he rejects the arrangement rather than profit from it. Actor Ricky Martin described Robert as too decent to accept the deal simply for money.
Showrunner Abe Sylvia characterized the Palm Beach social world as one built on performance: “It is a town of imposters … and the woman who runs the town is the biggest imposter of all.” That interpretation also reframes Maxine’s drive to earn Norma’s approval: the status she has been striving to enter rests on a false identity.

Who shot Robert, and did he die?
Mary Jones Davidson tries to assassinate President Nixon at the Beach Ball. Linda intercepts the shot, and Robert is hit. Season 1 ends without confirming whether he survives; Season 2’s premiere establishes that he took the bullet meant for Nixon and lived.
Sylvia said the sequence was a fictionalized nod to the 1975 attempt on President Gerald Ford by Sara Jane Moore, thwarted by Oliver “Billy” Sipple. The show shifts the target to Nixon, while drawing on the historical pattern of someone nearby intervening. In Sylvia’s reading, the shooting also brings the violence and public turmoil of the era into the characters’ protected social setting.
Who is the father of Mitzi’s baby?
Mitzi tells Maxine she is pregnant in the Season 1 finale but does not identify the father. Season 2 resolves the question: Douglas fathered the child.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What does the Season 1 ending mean for Maxine?
Maxine has been trying to become worthy of the world Norma represents. The identity reveal weakens the authority of that ideal: Norma’s image of effortless social power is itself an elaborate imposture. This is one way to read Maxine’s arc, supported by Sylvia’s description of the town; it is not a definitive account of every character’s motives.
The shooting works in a different register. The Beach Ball’s elite setting cannot keep the outside world at bay. Sylvia connected the scene to the Vietnam War and unrest of the late 1960s, and described Robert as the show’s most authentic and decent character—the one who takes the physical cost when violence arrives.
How does the series ultimately end?
“Maxine Throws a Party,” Season 1, Episode 10, is the Beach Ball finale that leaves Robert’s fate and Mitzi’s paternity open. Those were cliffhangers, not the show’s final answers. Apple lists the Season 2 finale as January 14, 2026; TheWrap reported that the series ended after two seasons. Its account of the final episode says Maxine and Robert marry, while Mitzi begins a relationship with Eddie.
Palm Royale is based on Juliet McDaniel’s novel Mr. & Mrs. American Pie. The television series’ later revelations and ending are specific to the show; the novel connection alone does not establish that the book explains those finale events.
