Monica Bellucci’s interest in Delores came from the character’s contradictions: she is frightening and funny, badly scarred yet strong. In interviews about Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, Bellucci also described a role built around physical expression, from playing Delores like a “broken doll” to learning choreography for a horror-dance scene.
Who is Delores in Beetlejuice Beetlejuice?
Delores is Beetlejuice’s ex-wife, a soul-sucking demon who pursues him in the Afterlife. Bellucci described her as a creature with a simple but striking reversal of the film’s pursuit: “While Beetlejuice hunts everybody, she hunts him.” In a Moviefone interview published September 2, 2024, Bellucci framed that hunt as part of what makes the character distinctive.
The official Warner Bros. Italia film page describes the sequel as a Tim Burton-directed return to Winter River, where the Deetz family reunites and an Afterlife portal opens. It lists Bellucci among the cast. The page’s release information is specific to Italy, rather than a universal release date.
Why did Bellucci find Delores compelling?
Bellucci’s own explanation centers on duality, not simply on playing a villain. Speaking with ABC News’ Good Morning America, she said: “To me, Delores is interesting because she has a duality. She’s scary but also funny, and she’s a metaphor of life. We all have emotional scars, and she’s full of scars but she’s strong.” The interview presents the metaphor as Bellucci’s reading of the character.

That interpretation gives Delores’s scars more than a visual function. Bellucci connected them to emotional wounds people carry, while describing Delores as resilient rather than defined by what has hurt her. The humor and menace sit alongside that strength, making her more than a one-note threat.
How did she approach Delores physically?
Bellucci said the performance depended on body language and expressive movement. In the Moviefone interview, she recalled approaching Delores like “a broken doll,” adding: “So, I played like a broken doll, and it was so much fun, I have to say.” She also described learning choreography for a horror-dance scene. These are Bellucci’s recollections of the performance process, not an independent account of what happened on set.

The broken-doll image fits the character’s combination of damage and force: Delores appears assembled from scars, yet moves with purpose as she hunts Beetlejuice. Bellucci’s account suggests that her physicality was central to how she expressed the character, alongside the makeup and costumes that helped shape Delores’s striking appearance.
What did Bellucci say about Delores’s look?
Bellucci singled out the character’s makeup and costumes as part of the appeal. She also called Delores “a great costume for Halloween” in her ABC News interview. That comment reflects the distinctive, scarred design of the character; it does not identify or endorse a particular costume product.

What “I loved her” means in context
The headline phrase is best understood as an expression of Bellucci’s interest in Delores as a role: she was drawn to the character’s duality, visual design and physical expressiveness. Her remarks do not establish a broader claim about her private feelings or the production. In Bellucci’s account, Delores’s appeal lies in being frightening and funny, wounded and strong at once.
