Season 2, Episode 7 spoilers. “The Red Sowing” is Rhaenyra Targaryen’s attempt to recruit dragonseeds—people with Targaryen ancestry who are not in the royal line—as riders for unclaimed dragons. It is also a lethal gamble: many candidates die, while Hugh Hammer claims Vermithor and Ulf White escapes the chaos before bonding with Silverwing. Addam of Hull is already riding Seasmoke when the recruitment begins, and his unexpected bond helps convince Rhaenyra to widen the search.
What is the Red Sowing?
“The Red Sowing” refers to Rhaenyra’s effort to find new dragonriders among dragonseeds and match them with dragons without riders. “Sowing” captures the idea of spreading potential riders across the realm; “red” points to the bloodshed of the attempt. The Guardian also reads the title as an echo of the “Red Wedding” from Game of Thrones—a critical interpretation, not a confirmed statement from the show’s creators. The Guardian’s episode recap.
The episode’s nickname, “Bastard Buffet,” may sound flippant, but the candidates are not taking part in a safe audition. Rhaenyra sends them into the Dragonmont to approach Vermithor, and the dragon kills many of them.
Why does Rhaenyra recruit the dragonseeds?
The immediate catalyst is Addam of Hull. Seasmoke chooses him before the main recruitment, and Addam tells Rhaenyra that the dragon found and claimed him—not that he sought the dragon out. He pledges his service and returns with her to Dragonstone. He does not tell her in that conversation that Corlys Velaryon is his father, though Corlys and members of the council recognize the likely connection. Sky’s episode explainer.

Addam’s bond changes Rhaenyra’s calculation. If a man outside the royal line can ride a dragon, she reasons, she may be able to find more people with the ancestry to do the same. Mysaria points her toward Targaryen illegitimate descendants, and Rhaenyra recruits them to try for the riderless dragons. The Washington Post’s recap.
It is both a military move and a political one. More riders mean more dragons on Rhaenyra’s side, but the effort also gives people beyond the royal family access to an extraordinary source of power. The Washington Post frames that tension through the episode’s themes of leadership and citizenship.

Who claims Vermithor and Silverwing?

The episode depicts Hugh’s stand as brave, but it does not establish a universal rule that a dragon will choose anyone who shows courage. Kieran Bew, who plays Hugh, described the character’s anger in an interview with Sky: “They call Vermithor ‘The Bronze Fury’, and I think that’s really fitting for Hugh. What changes for Rhaenyra after the sowing?
Rhaenyra’s side now has Addam on Seasmoke, Hugh on Vermithor, and Ulf on Silverwing. That is a substantial practical change to the immediate balance of dragon power: it gives her more leverage in the war and draws Aemond and Vhagar’s attention. TheWrap’s recap.
But the victory comes at a human cost. The deaths at Vermithor’s lair expose the desperation behind the plan: Rhaenyra needs riders badly enough to put candidates in grave danger, without being able to promise that they will survive or be accepted. The new riders strengthen her position while making clear that dragon power is no longer confined to the established royal riders.

How does the show’s Red Sowing compare with the books?
The TV episode adapts the broad idea of recruiting dragonseeds, but book-history details should not be treated as automatic show details. In the histories, Jacaerys calls for dragonseeds and promises successful claimants knighthood, lands, and riches; the account describes the Sowing as bloody. TheWrap reports that comparison, but those incentives are not fully inventoried in the episode recaps and should not be assumed to be the show’s exact offer. TheWrap’s recap.
The show also presents Addam as Corlys’s illegitimate son, as reported in coverage by TheWrap and The Washington Post. That is the show’s characterization; book parentage should not be imported into this version of the story.

Showrunner Ryan Condal, speaking on Sky’s official podcast about how Rhaenyra interprets Addam’s arrival, said: “You’re starting to hear these kinds of Messianic words, and her talking to Mysaria about Addam coming to her, being delivered to her as if a divine messenger.” Actor Clinton Liberty, discussing Corlys telling Addam “well done,” said: “Two words, but they mean just more than well done, dude.
