Scott plays Tom Ripley in Steven Zaillian’s adaptation of Patricia Highsmith’s novels, filmed in black and white and set in an early-1960s Italy. Netflix lists the show as a 2024 limited series.
What is Ripley about?
Tom Ripley begins as a small-time New York check fraudster. He is hired to travel to Italy and persuade the wealthy son of an American family to return home. The assignment draws Ripley into a growing web of deception; the series’ official synopsis and coverage describe its premise without requiring viewers to know the later turns. The Associated Press describes the story as moving into murder, impersonation and further fraud, so this overview leaves those developments there.
The series draws on Patricia Highsmith’s Tom Ripley novels, particularly The Talented Mr. Ripley, first published in 1955. You can read the novel as a companion to the show, but it is not a prerequisite for watching. Netflix’s production feature identifies the novel as the adaptation’s source.
Who made the series, and who stars in it?
Steven Zaillian created Ripley and wrote and directed all eight episodes. Andrew Scott stars as Tom Ripley, with Dakota Fanning and Johnny Flynn among the principal cast listed by Netflix.

The production’s visual world was shaped by director of photography Robert Elswit, production designer David Gropman, and costume designers Maurizio Millenotti and Giovanni Casalnuovo. Netflix’s feature says Gropman’s team designed more than 200 sets and locations for the production; the figure combines both categories rather than describing sets alone.
Why is Ripley in black and white?
The entire series is photographed in black and white. Zaillian planned that look from the beginning, aiming to evoke the period without turning Italy into a bright, picturesque postcard. In an interview with the Associated Press on April 3, 2024, he said: “It puts us in that time period effortlessly and immediately. But more than that, I did not want what I would call a color postcard sort of Italy for this story, with sunny blue skies and lots of colorful outfits. That was not something I saw in my mind when I read the book and that was not something that I wanted to do in the show.”

Netflix’s account of the production describes a deliberate recreation of a 1960s aesthetic through Italian locations, sets, costumes and production design. The monochrome photography and carefully composed period settings can be read as noir-inflected, but that is a description of the effect rather than an official genre label. The Television Academy also notes the series’ black-and-white visual approach.
What is the pacing like?
Ripley allows scenes and suspense to unfold slowly. The Associated Press characterized it as deliberately sedate at times; Zaillian explained that he wanted the story to remain with tension and unease even when events were not moving quickly. Viewers expecting a fast, dialogue-heavy thriller should know that the series often gives atmosphere and pauses room to work. Whether that approach suits you is a matter of taste.
