Why is Ellen promised to Malcolm Grant?
Ellen wakes expecting that a suitor has shown interest in her. Instead, she discovers that Castle Leoch considers her betrothed to Malcolm Grant. Colum tells her the arrangement is intended to mend damage between clans. Ellen objects that no one asked her, and invokes her late father’s promise that she would not be forced into a marriage against her will.
The episode presents the betrothal as clan politics, not a romance Ellen chose. That distinction makes the news especially painful: her future is being negotiated by others even as she is secretly involved with Brian Fraser. The account of these episode events comes from Lincee Ray’s recap, republished by Yahoo and dated August 15, 2025; it is a plot recap rather than an independent historical account. Read the Yahoo recap.
How does the betrothal affect Ellen and Brian?
The Malcolm match puts Ellen and Brian’s secret relationship under pressure. Brian and Murtagh hear that she may marry Malcolm and consider ways to disrupt the engagement. Lord Lovat proposes damaging Ellen’s reputation as a means of stopping the marriage. In the recap, this is a threat within the fictional plot, not evidence about historical Scottish marriage customs.

Harriet Slater, who plays Ellen, told Flicks that “They’re both taking massive risks in even meeting,” adding that discovery could put Ellen’s reputation and their lives at risk. The clandestine relationship therefore carries personal danger as well as the prospect of losing each other to a political arrangement. Flicks’ series feature and interview.
What is the dispute between Colum and Dougal?
Ellen’s betrothal is entangled with the MacKenzie brothers’ competing political maneuvers. Dougal says he did not promise Ellen to Malcolm; Jocasta tells Ellen that Dougal has also offered her hand to the Jacobites. The conflicting claims leave Ellen caught between her brothers’ agendas, rather than in control of her own match.

The brothers’ fight over lairdship
Flashbacks show Red Jacob criticizing Colum and Dougal after a failed cattle raid and Colum’s injury. Their conflict concerns who can lead Clan MacKenzie and what leadership requires. Ellen argues that Colum’s strategic and administrative abilities matter alongside physical strength.
A divided leadership, and a pledge of loyalty
Colum and Dougal eventually pledge loyalty to one another, with Colum as laird and Dougal as war chieftain. Ned explains the shared arrangement to the clan. The resolution gives each brother a defined role instead of making leadership depend on one brother defeating the other.

What happens to Julia and Henry?
The episode also advances the parallel story of Julia and Henry, set during World War I. Davina suspects Julia is pregnant and offers her a way out, but Julia refuses. Henry searches for her while Julia worries about Lord Lovat’s response to her pregnancy and writes to him.
Flicks frames Julia and Henry’s story as a wartime romance linked to the eighteenth-century Scottish plot. Hermione Corfield, who plays Julia, describes the prequel as “a completely untold story.” She also sees a resemblance between the two women: “I think they’re both women that sort of refused to be put in a box or tied down or told no.”
