Bill Skarsgård’s Count Orlok is the result of more than prosthetic makeup: costume, a lowered voice, physical choices and the actor’s performance all helped create the imposing vampire in Robert Eggers’s Nosferatu. Skarsgård said he did not feel like Orlok without the makeup, calling the prosthetics and costume pieces he needed to perform the role.
What made Skarsgård’s Orlok transformation so dramatic?
The character came together through several elements working as one. In a September 2024 conversation with AnOther, Eggers recalled that Skarsgård worked with Ása Júníusdóttir on lowering his voice. Skarsgård described the team adjusting and blending the skin tone as the design developed, and said his eyes and facial movement helped make the assembled look feel real to him. Eggers praised the result as a complete transformation.
Skarsgård put the relationship between appearance and performance plainly in a Fangoria interview: “But I never felt like Orlok without the makeup, so the prosthetics and the costume were all pieces that I needed to perform him.” The look was not simply a disguise placed over a finished performance; it was part of how he inhabited the character.
How long did the makeup and prosthetics take?
Published accounts give different timings, so there is no single figure that should be treated as definitive for every application. Eggers told Moviefone in 2024 that applying the prosthetics took six hours. Esquire’s 2024 profile described Skarsgård spending three to six hours per day in makeup and prosthetics. The reports use different wording and should be read as attributed production accounts, not a reconciled daily schedule.

How did he change his voice and physical presence?
Eggers said Skarsgård worked with Ása Júníusdóttir to lower his voice; Esquire also reported that he worked with an opera singer to bring it down. The sources do not establish a measured pitch or a specific vocal regimen. The aim, as described in these accounts, was a voice markedly unlike the actor’s own.
Skarsgård told Vanity Fair that Orlok was further from himself than Pennywise in voice, posture, age and appearance. That description points to a whole-body characterization, rather than a change limited to his face or sound. Eggers also recalled that Skarsgård trained, though the cited accounts do not specify particular exercises or a training routine.

Movement was another part of the collaboration. In the AnOther conversation, Eggers named Marie-Gabrielle Rotie as a movement choreographer instrumental in Lily-Rose Depp’s performance and in the death scene with Skarsgård. That detail places the character’s physical presence within the film’s broader movement work without suggesting an unreported set of techniques.

Screen Daily described Eggers’s Orlok as a hulking brute with a booming voice and thick moustache, contrasting him with the skeletal monster associated with Max Schreck’s 1922 portrayal. That is a useful way to understand the design choice: this Orlok’s silhouette and facial hair present an imposing, nobleman-like figure, not simply a repetition of the earlier film’s gaunt image.
