Robert Eggers’ Nosferatu makes its vampire story feel less like a chase than a contamination: dread seeps into rooms, bodies and relationships long before the threat can be contained. The result is a richly made gothic horror film whose sensory force is stronger than the clarity of its portrait of Ellen, the young woman at the center of the vampire’s obsession.
What Eggers’ Nosferatu is about
Focus Features describes the film as a gothic tale of obsession between a haunted young woman and a vampire fixated on her. That framing points to the film’s central imbalance: the vampire’s desire is a consuming force, while Ellen’s experience of it is the more elusive mystery.
This is a 2024 feature directed by Robert Eggers, released theatrically in the United States on December 25, 2024. The British Board of Film Classification lists its runtime as 132 minutes and 24 seconds. That long stretch gives the film room to build atmosphere, but also makes the question of pacing part of the experience.
How the horror works
Dread before shock
Eggers leans into the slow pressure of gothic horror. Rather than treating the vampire as simply a creature to be confronted, the film makes his fixation feel like an influence spreading through the story. The horror gains force from anticipation and from the sense that ordinary spaces have become unsafe.

That approach can be unnerving without making every moment startling. Viewers looking for a fast succession of shocks may find the film’s deliberate tempo a less direct route to fear; its aim is closer to sustained unease.
A world shaped by visual detail
The film’s atmosphere is inseparable from its setting and design. Costume designer Linda Muir has described the team’s effort to reconstruct details of German life in 1838, as well as the extensive lookbook Eggers shared with her and production designer Craig Lathrop during preparation. That account supports the impression of a carefully coordinated period world, though it does not establish that every detail is historically exact.

The period texture matters because the film’s dread depends on a world that feels inhabited, not merely decorated. Its visual beauty does not soften the horror so much as give it a tangible setting. RogerEbert.com’s review called the film “cryptic, beautiful and unsettling”—a useful description of the tension between its allure and its disquiet, rather than a verdict that resolves it.
How this remake relates to earlier Nosferatus
Eggers’ film belongs to the tradition of F. W. Murnau’s 1922 silent Nosferatu, but it is not simply a reproduction of that film. Film at Lincoln Center identifies it as Eggers’ fourth feature and places it in that silent-film lineage. RogerEbert.com’s review discusses it as a fusion of Murnau’s work with later vampire-film traditions.

Its connection to the original gives the film an expressive framework; the more important question is whether the new version’s emphasis on obsession and atmosphere gives its characters enough room to feel fully understood.
Where the film’s intensity meets its limits
The central dramatic tension is compelling: a vampire’s fixation places pressure on a haunted young woman, and the film makes that pressure feel invasive. Yet the force of the obsession does not automatically make Ellen’s inner life transparent. The Associated Press review praised the film’s look while questioning how much viewers learn about her. That is a critical reservation worth taking seriously, not a consensus claim.

For some viewers, Ellen’s partial opacity may strengthen the sense that she is trapped in an experience she cannot easily explain. For others, it may keep the story’s emotional center at a distance. The film’s strongest effects are often atmospheric and visual; its character writing may leave a less definite impression than its images.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Is Nosferatu worth watching?
Yes, if you value horror built from period atmosphere, visual design and accumulating dread more than brisk pacing or a fully explicit psychological portrait. Eggers makes the familiar vampire premise feel physically and historically grounded, and the film’s beauty is part of its menace.
If your main priority is a sharply legible account of Ellen’s thoughts and choices, the film may feel less satisfying. Its central obsession is vivid; the person caught within it is not always equally clear. That tension is the film’s most consequential limitation—and part of what makes its gothic mood linger.
