His reported comment describes what he observed between the actors; it does not confirm that they are romantically involved.
What did John Hoffman say about Meryl Streep and Martin Short?
Hoffman’s reported words were: “We were laughing our heads off and they just delighted in each other on screen, off screen in every way.” E! News and Us Weekly attributed the remark to Hoffman in an interview with Decider ahead of the show’s season-four finale. E! News Us Weekly
Hoffman is a co-creator of Only Murders in the Building. In context, the line is a description of the actors’ rapport as he saw it while they worked together—not a statement about their private relationship.
What is the connection between their characters?
Streep plays Loretta Durkin and Short plays Oliver Putnam. Their characters have an on-screen romance, which is distinct from the actors’ off-screen rapport. Coverage of Hoffman’s comment discusses the characters’ storyline separately from the performers’ relationship. Us Weekly

E! News
Does the comment mean Streep and Short are dating?
No. The reported remark supports that Hoffman saw warmth and enjoyment between the co-stars while they worked together. It does not establish that they are a couple. The romantic relationship identified in the coverage is between Loretta and Oliver, their fictional characters.
