When viewers and critics objected that Nobody Wants This made Jewish women look controlling and hostile, creator Erin Foster defended the show’s intentions and character choices in September 2024. A year later, she said she understood why some Jewish women felt hurt by the portrayal. The exchange was not a single verdict on the series: it brought together criticism of season one, Foster’s explanation, and differing Jewish perspectives.
What critics objected to
The Netflix romantic comedy follows Joanne, an agnostic podcast host, and Noah, a rabbi, whose relationship faces resistance from Noah’s family and community. Conversion and their differing backgrounds are part of the story. Critics focused on how Jewish women around Noah—especially his mother, Bina, and sister-in-law, Esther—were written in relation to Joanne and the romance.
In the Los Angeles Times, critic Jessica Radloff described the impression as: “We come off as controlling, marriage-hungry women who want to plan dinner parties and alienate anyone who doesn’t share those same dreams.” Esther Zuckerman later summed up her season-one criticism by calling the Jewish women “nags, harpies, and the ultimate villains of this story.” These were the critics’ assessments of the characters, not a consensus among Jewish viewers. Radloff also asked whether it should be possible to see Jewish characters without feeling “othered.”
What Foster said in September and October 2024
The Los Angeles Times interview
In an interview published September 30, 2024, Foster said, “I think we need positive Jewish stories right now.” She challenged the idea that the show simply repeated stereotypes, pointing to Noah—a young rabbi—as an unconventional lead. She also argued that depicting Jewish parents differently could have drawn criticism for feeling inauthentic. The interview presented her response alongside the objections; it did not establish that the disagreement had been settled.

TheWrap interview
In an October 4 interview with TheWrap, Foster addressed Esther’s nagging more directly: “That’s like how I am as a wife … I nag my husband a lot, too — I’m the queen of micromanaging my husband, and it annoys him to no end.” She described Esther’s husband, Sasha, as a “man child.” Foster also said the writers’ room included Jewish writers with varied relationships to Jewish identity and family backgrounds. She connected the show’s outsider theme to her own conversion and marriage, while saying her husband’s family welcomed her.
Foster has said the series draws on her life, but it is fictionalized. Her comments explain her perspective on the material; they do not mean the fictional events reproduce her in-laws’ behavior. In TheWrap, she added, “Everyone’s gonna have opinions, and that’s OK, and I accept it.”

What changed in Foster’s 2025 comments
In October 2025, while discussing season two with the Associated Press, Foster put greater emphasis on how the portrayal could land with viewers. “If you are a Jewish woman who has felt like you didn’t like how you’re portrayed in the world or how people view you and this sort of reaffirmed that, I can understand the sensitivity,” she said. “Definitely it was never the intention.” Those remarks add a later acknowledgment of viewers’ reaction; they do not replace or revise what she said in 2024.
The AP reported that Nobody Wants This had 57 million views in three months, according to Netflix, and spent six weeks on Netflix’s Global English Top 10 TV List. Those are historical figures reported in 2025, not current viewing totals.

Jewish viewers and leaders offered different perspectives
The AP’s 2025 report included views that resist a single community-wide judgment. Rabbi Elan Babchuck, executive vice president of the National Jewish Center for Learning and Leadership, said the series sometimes treated Judaism as “a test to pass rather than a tradition to pass on.” After watching the full season, he added: “I celebrate the show. I think representation matters across the board, even when it’s in flawed form.”
Rabbi Nicole Guzik of Sinai Temple told the AP that Jewish stories are diverse and that she may not align with every part of a Jewish narrative shown onscreen. Actor Adam Brody, also speaking to the AP, put the limits of representation this way: “Obviously, one show or group of characters can’t stand in for a whole civilization.” These comments are individual perspectives, not proof that Jewish viewers agreed on whether the portrayal succeeded.

How season two addresses the criticism
The AP reported that season two gives Bina another side and explores more of Esther’s story. In an October 21, 2025 interview with TIME, Zuckerman said she liked the second season and that Esther’s story addressed one of her main objections to the first season’s characterization. TIME reported that Jenni Konner and Bruce Eric Kaplan took over as showrunners after season one, and that Rabbi Sarah Bassin consulted during season two.
That later development matters when assessing the series as a whole, but it does not erase the season-one criticism. The core disagreement is about both intent and effect: whether Bina and Esther read as particular, flawed people within a story, or as familiar antagonistic figures with too little complexity and agency alongside Joanne.
