Spoilers for Season 1, Episode 17, “I Was That, Too.” The episode aired April 10, 2025, and is the penultimate installment before the two-hour Season 1 finale. TVLine’s recap identifies it as the episode immediately preceding that finale.
What happens when Olympia confronts Matty?
The episode picks up after Olympia’s discovery of the Westchester address connected to Matty’s car. She demands answers about Matty’s identity and learns that she really does live there. Matty admits that “Matty Matlock” is a constructed identity and says the deception is connected to her daughter.
Olympia takes Matty to an empty office, removes her devices, and tells her to write down every lie. It is a practical attempt to regain control of a relationship Matty has shaped through concealment. Olympia is not yet ready to accept Matty’s explanations on trust alone.

What is Amy Buckley’s case about?
Amy Buckley, who is pregnant, asks Olympia for help leaving Grant, whom she describes as controlling and abusive. Olympia’s team first seeks a temporary restraining order, but the request is not granted on the evidence available. The situation is complicated by Grant’s family being a longstanding client of the firm and Senior pushing for a quick resolution.
Amy’s prenuptial agreement also threatens her custody and financial position if she has had an affair. Rather than rely on that vulnerable route, the team pursues an annulment, arguing that Grant misrepresented how they would raise children. Evidence that he made contradictory statements to his priest and to Amy supports the case. Amy goes into labor after the annulment effort reaches its resolution.

Why did Matty join Jacobson Moore?
Olympia discovers that Matty is married to Edwin and makes her call him on speaker. Matty explains that she came to the firm after an online post alleged that someone at Jacobson Moore had hidden evidence related to an opioid warning-label study. According to Matty, the study disappeared from discovery and Julian took it during a fire drill on April 6, 2010.
That account gives Olympia a reason for Matty’s long deception, but it does not establish that Julian took the study. The episode presents the claim through Matty, whose credibility is already under strain. Olympia is angry that Matty has been monitoring her and implicated Julian; the allegation remains something to investigate, not a settled answer.

What does Matty offer Olympia?
Matty has a laptop containing a voice note from Olympia’s late father. She offers to tell the New York Times that Olympia was not Julian’s accomplice if Olympia helps find the last financial detail in her investigation. The offer ties Matty’s search to Olympia’s reputation and to a deeply personal connection, but it does not repair the trust Matty has broken.
Olympia turns to Julian and asks how they could afford their home. He explains that it came through a trust, but his answer does not satisfy her. The exchange keeps Olympia’s suspicion alive without resolving whether Julian had any role in the missing study.

What does the Episode 17 ending mean?
Olympia returns to Matty and accompanies her to Westchester. Edwin and Alfie open the door to the two women together. That choice changes the balance between them: Olympia is willing to see more of Matty’s life and investigation firsthand, even though she has not accepted Matty’s version of events or cleared Julian.
The ending is therefore a beginning rather than a reconciliation. Olympia has moved closer to Matty, but the central question—what happened to the study, and whether Julian was involved—remains open going into the finale.

Where can you watch or own the season?
Paramount+ lists Matlock and its episodes; the catalog, subscription terms, and availability vary by region and can change. CBS also maintains the official series page.
