On Swift Horses is a 2025 romantic drama about people reaching for lives they were not expected to want. Daisy Edgar-Jones gives the film a compelling center as Muriel, a newly married woman whose secret racehorse bets open a door to self-discovery. Jacob Elordi’s restless Julius brings a parallel story of gambling and queer desire. The performances and quiet moments can be affecting, but the film’s two strands do not always balance: in his Associated Press review, Mark Kennedy found the plot meandering and some of its symbolism too blunt.
What is On Swift Horses about?
Directed by Daniel Minahan and written by Bryce Kass, the film adapts Shannon Pufahl’s 2019 novel. Its story is set in the 1950s, in the uneasy aftermath of the Korean War. Muriel and her husband Lee begin a new life in California after Lee returns from the war. When Lee’s brother Julius arrives, his gambling and concealed past unsettle the household.
Julius drifts toward Las Vegas and pursues a young card cheat. Muriel, meanwhile, secretly bets on racehorses and discovers a desire that takes her beyond the role she has been living. The distributor describes the resulting complication as “a dangerous love triangle quickly forms.” More than a conventional romance, the film sets Muriel’s private awakening beside Julius’s search for connection and escape.
Sony Pictures Classics announced a U.S. nationwide theatrical release for April 25, 2025. The film premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival in 2024 and was set to close SXSW’s Film & TV Festival in March 2025, according to the distributor’s release announcement.

How well do the performances and parallel stories work?
Daisy Edgar-Jones makes Muriel’s restraint legible
Muriel’s story depends on the distance between what she shows and what she wants. Edgar-Jones gives that inward conflict a readable presence, lending weight to the small decisions and silences that carry the character’s arc. Kennedy singled out her performance in the Associated Press review, and praised a silent ride home as one of the film’s moments that lands.
Jacob Elordi gives Julius an unsettled momentum
Elordi’s Julius moves through gambling and romance with an energy that contrasts with Muriel’s more contained life. His plot makes the film’s queer-romance framing explicit, but it also competes for screen attention. Kennedy’s central structural complaint is that Julius’s storyline draws focus away from Muriel’s, leaving the film’s two journeys less integrated than their parallel design promises.

The imbalance is the film’s main trade-off: Julius adds a vivid counterpoint, yet the emotional center can feel divided. The story is most persuasive when the actors convey what their characters cannot comfortably say; it is less persuasive when plot turns have to carry the connection between them.
Does the film’s neo-Western style suit its story?
The neo-Western framing is less about a frontier landscape than about people trying to escape the narrow roles of their time. Muriel’s domestic California life and Julius’s Las Vegas drift become different versions of that search. The contrast gives the film a useful shape: one character tests the limits of a conventional marriage and home, while the other moves through a world of wagers, secrecy and uncertain romance.

Pufahl’s author page describes the protagonists’ parallel journeys through risk, romance and self-discovery, and emphasizes the period décor and their yearnings. That framing helps explain the film’s appeal: it treats desire as something discovered through choices rather than announced all at once. The same source’s description of the story as a risk-taking path toward self-knowledge is an interpretation of its themes, not proof that every viewer will find the drama equally affecting.
Where does On Swift Horses stumble?
Kennedy’s Associated Press review, published April 23, 2025, rated the film two stars out of four and called it a “queer tale set against the post-Korean War status quo.” He praised Edgar-Jones and the silent ride-home scene, while criticizing the meandering plot, clunky symbols and late melodrama. That is one critic’s assessment, not an aggregate verdict.

The tension between subtle performance and emphatic storytelling is central to the film’s unevenness. A quiet gesture can suggest a character confronting a life she did not choose; more overt symbolic images can make the same idea feel underlined. When the film lets its actors carry the emotional meaning, its yearning has room to breathe. When it leans on conspicuous imagery or escalates into late melodrama, the story can lose the restraint that makes its best scenes work.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Is On Swift Horses worth watching?
It is worth considering if you are drawn to period romance built around withheld feelings, strong performances and queer characters testing the boundaries of postwar respectability. Edgar-Jones offers a particularly compelling reason to watch, and the film’s quiet scenes can convey more than its plot-heavy stretches. If you want a tightly focused narrative or consistently subtle symbolism, Kennedy’s criticisms point to real reasons it may frustrate you.
