What is Materialists about?
Written and directed by Celine Song, Materialists stars Dakota Johnson as Lucy, an ambitious New York matchmaker caught between a seemingly ideal new match and an imperfect ex, played by Pedro Pascal and Chris Evans. A24’s official synopsis sets up that love triangle, but the film’s interest is broader than choosing between two suitors: it asks how people weigh desirability, security and compatibility.

Lucy’s profession gives the premise its sharpest tension. She makes judgments about other people’s romantic prospects for a living, while her own desires are harder to quantify. Johnson portrays her as polished and capable, but not fully connected to what she wants. Lucy’s professional confidence and private uncertainty make her more interesting than a simple romantic-comedy protagonist waiting for the right man.
Why the dating-market idea matters
Song has said the film is about the dating marketplace single people navigate, not a referendum on which of two “types” of men a viewer should prefer. “It was never going to be a conversation about which flavor of a person,” she told the Associated Press.

That distinction is the key to reading the film. Its matchmaking world makes romantic choice feel like a set of trade-offs: attraction alongside money, security alongside chemistry, and an appealing résumé alongside the messy reality of intimacy. The glossy setting can invite the fantasy of a familiar rom-com, while the story keeps returning to the uncomfortable calculations underneath that fantasy.
Is Materialists a romantic comedy?
It has the sheen and premise of one, but it does not always deliver the easy pleasures audiences may expect from a straightforward romantic comedy. Its tone leaves room for pointed observations about transactional dating and the role of wealth in deciding who seems like a “good match.” That friction is deliberate, even if it can make the film feel less buoyant than its polished surface suggests.

Critical reactions have differed on how well the film balances its ideas with its romance. ABC Australia cautions that it may be a difficult watch for viewers expecting a conventional first-date comedy; other assessments, including those from the Los Angeles Times, RogerEbert.com and TheWrap, offer different judgments of its tone, performances and execution. The divided response makes sense: the film’s social questions are more consistent than its romantic momentum.
Is Materialists worth watching?
Watch it for Johnson’s composed, unsettled Lucy and for Song’s interest in the collision between love and calculation. The central performances give the triangle enough appeal to hold attention, while the film’s best moments come when the promise of romantic wish fulfillment gives way to harder questions about what people value in partners—and why.

The trade-off is that the ideas sometimes feel more fully developed than the dramatic payoff. If you want a light, cleanly resolved rom-com, Materialists may feel cooler and more searching than its styling promises. If you enjoy romances that examine the social logic shaping people’s choices, its tension between fantasy and arithmetic is the point.
