Spoilers for Outlander Season 7, Episode 9, “Unfinished Business.” The Season 7 Part 2 opener sends Jamie, Claire, and Young Ian back to Lallybroch, where Old Ian is dying, while Roger and Buck’s search for Jemmy takes them roughly 40 years earlier than they expected. Showrunner and executive producer Matthew B. Roberts says the time-travel detour may prove to be exactly where the men need to be.
What “Unfinished Business” sets in motion
“Unfinished Business” is Season 7, Episode 9, and the first episode of the season’s second half—not the season finale. STARZ’s episode listing describes Jamie, Claire, and Ian returning to Lallybroch, Ian reconnecting with family in a time of need, and Roger and Buck searching for Jemmy in the past. STARZ’s episode page lists the installment as a roughly one-hour, TV-MA drama directed by Stewart Svaasand and written by Barbara Stepansky.
The episode divides its attention between two journeys: a homecoming shadowed by illness and grief in Scotland, and a time-travel search that lands Roger and Buck in an earlier generation of the Fraser family. Roberts discusses both tracks in Maureen Lee Lenker’s Entertainment Weekly interview, published November 23, 2024.
Why the return to Lallybroch is painful
Jamie, Claire, and Young Ian return to Lallybroch and find Old Ian terminally ill. In Roberts’s reading, the reunion turns the expected comfort of homecoming into a confrontation with loss. Jamie is grieving an old friend; Claire’s medical skill cannot save someone she loves; and Young Ian feels guilty for having been away.

Roberts sees Old Ian’s blessing as important for Young Ian: it gives him permission to return to America and pursue Rachel rather than remain in Scotland out of guilt. He also interprets Jamie and Laoghaire’s reconciliation as a chance to release old resentment and guilt. These are the showrunner’s readings of the characters and episode, not claims that the characters’ conflicts are simply resolved.
Claire’s decision to help Lord John is another expression of loyalty, Roberts says, rooted in the bonds of the Fraser family. The episode’s Lallybroch story is therefore about more than returning to a familiar place: it asks what family members owe one another when love, grief, and obligations pull them in different directions.

Why Roger and Buck arrive decades too early
Roger and Buck are looking for Jemmy, but their journey lands them about 40 years earlier than intended. They encounter Jamie’s father, Brian Fraser, and a younger Jenny, and discover that the local healer is Geillis Duncan.
Roberts frames the wrong destination as potentially purposeful. “While they didn’t reach their intended destination, this ‘wrong’ turn will prove to be exactly where they needed to be,” he says, suggesting that fate may have a better plan than the travelers do. That is a producer’s tease about the story’s direction, not confirmation of a complete explanation for the season’s events.

Roberts also describes Geillis at this point in the story as driven by Scottish independence and conviction, before she becomes the antagonist viewers know. His comment offers a perspective on where the character stands in this episode, rather than a guarantee about what Roger and Buck’s meeting with her will mean.
When Part 2 premiered
STARZ announced on July 11, 2024, that Season 7 Part 2 would begin in the United States on Friday, November 22, 2024, with new episodes scheduled weekly on Fridays. Its announcement highlighted the return to Scotland, the Revolutionary War’s pull on loyalties, and dangers facing Roger and Brianna across time. How the episode fits the season
Season 7 was expanded to 16 episodes and drew on Diana Gabaldon’s seventh and eighth Outlander novels, An Echo in the Bone and Written in My Own Heart’s Blood, according to the Television Academy’s July 24, 2023, feature on the series. The season was arranged in two halves. Roberts described the structure as following “a different tributary in the second half of the season” before returning “to meet the main river.”
The feature also places the adaptation in context: it reported more than 50 million copies sold for Gabaldon’s book series in 2023. That is a dated figure, not a current sales total. Roberts said the series would not “walk on what she does,” referring to avoiding conflict with Gabaldon’s still-unfinished book saga.
