Kevin Smith says The 4:30 Movie connects to Clerks through the real places and memories behind each film—not through a shared plot. Clerks grew from his access to the Quick Stop where he worked; the later film draws on the Atlantic Highlands theater he went to as a teenager, including memories of his first date there. Smith describes Clerks as his origin story as a filmmaker and The 4:30 Movie as a look further back into his youth.
How does The 4:30 Movie relate to Clerks?
The link is autobiographical inspiration: each film begins with a place Smith knew firsthand, but they come from different chapters of his life. Clerks grew out of his job at a convenience store and his access to the Quick Stop. The 4:30 Movie returns to the movie theater he attended as a teenager and to memories of his first date there.
In an interview with The Talks, published October 23, 2024, Smith explained how the earlier film began: “With Clerks, what I had was the location, it was a movie that was born location first, I had access to the Quick Stop because I worked there, so I thought, ‘Okay, I’ll make a movie about being here.’” Later, he and friends bought the Atlantic Highlands theater where he had spent much of his childhood and named it Smodcastle Cinemas. That familiar setting gave him a foundation for a period story set in 1986.
Smith has not presented The 4:30 Movie as a literal account of his life, or as a continuation of Clerks. The connection is in the way personal experience supplies the films’ starting points: a workplace that helped shape his route into filmmaking in one case, and a teenage memory in the other.

Why Smith says Clerks was already his origin story
Smith said he did not initially think of making an origin story because he had already made one. “To me, it never occurred to me to tell my origin story because Clerks was my origin story,” he told Blueprint: Review in an interview published November 3, 2024. The convenience-store job was part of the path that led him to make his first film; in his framing, that made Clerks the story of how he became a filmmaker.
The idea for a film about an earlier period came after Smith saw Paul Thomas Anderson’s Licorice Pizza. He began thinking about his own teenage years and first girlfriend. The theater helped make those memories tangible: Smith recalled that its interior had not changed and that he could still remember where he sat. The new film therefore reaches back before the work-and-filmmaking chapter represented by Clerks.

What happens in The 4:30 Movie?
The film’s premise centers on three 16-year-old friends sneaking into movies at their local cinema. Its central boy, Brian David (Austin Zajur), hopes to take his crush, Melody Barnegat (Siena Agudong), to a 4:30 screening of the fictional film Astro Blaster. Burny (Nicholas Cirillo) and Belly (Reed Northrup) are also among the reported main characters. The premise and character details were discussed in a Film Obsessive cast interview published September 10, 2024.
The 1980s setting and theater-going story give Smith room to revisit a formative time, but they do not make the film a Clerks prequel. One film dramatizes the world of the convenience store where he worked; the other imagines a teenage summer shaped by moviegoing and a first date.

How the film’s movie references fit its personal story
Smith also discussed the film’s faux trailers, saying they drew on the fun he saw in the work of Quentin Tarantino and Robert Rodriguez. They offered a way to evoke the experience of going to the movies, while the production’s budget shaped what could be made: a planned trailer that would have required fourteen locations was cut in favor of work more important to the story.
Among the trailers that remained were The Health Nut, Booties, and Sister Sugar Walls. Smith described the last as the one constructed most like a full theatrical trailer. These details come from the Blueprint: Review interview.

Two films, two formative locations
| Film | Location Smith connects to it | Life chapter | Role in Smith’s framing |
|---|---|---|---|
| Clerks | The Quick Stop where he worked | His convenience-store job and early path into filmmaking | His stated origin story as a filmmaker |
| The 4:30 Movie | The Atlantic Highlands theater he attended as a teenager, later called Smodcastle Cinemas | His teenage years, first date, and first girlfriend | A retrospective coming-of-age story inspired by memory |
Smith described the emotional appeal of revisiting a shared kind of memory in The Talks interview: “My job is just: here I am going through all the effort of trying to recreate a moment that most people have had in their life. That’s the joy of it, man.” The films’ relationship, then, is not that one continues the other. It is that Smith used access to a formative place—and what he remembered there—to begin telling a different part of his own story.
