Jimmy Carter’s life ran from a farm near Plains, Georgia, to the White House and then to decades of international peace and humanitarian work. Born October 1, 1924, he became Georgia’s governor, the 39th U.S. president, and—after leaving office—a founder of The Carter Center. Carter died on December 29, 2024, at age 100.
How Plains shaped Carter’s early life
James Earl Carter Jr. grew up on his family’s farm near Plains, in southwest Georgia. The National Park Service describes those years as formative, but Carter’s story was never only that of a peanut farmer: he later served as a naval officer, ran a business, entered state politics, and became president. The farm is an important beginning, not a complete explanation of the career that followed.

For Carter’s own perspective on his rural childhood, his 2001 memoir, An Hour Before Daylight: Memories of a Rural Boyhood, is a direct first-person account. The Carter Center also lists A Full Life: Reflections at Ninety (2015), a broader retrospective. The Carter Center’s book list provides further information.

Inflation and the Iran hostage crisis
Inflation and the Iran hostage crisis became defining difficulties of Carter’s presidency and were central issues associated with his defeat in the 1980 election. The hostages were released shortly before his term ended in January 1981.
A consequential post-presidency
After leaving the White House, Carter and his wife, Rosalynn, founded The Carter Center in 1982. The organization pursued work in peace, democracy, health, and human rights, giving Carter a substantial public role well beyond his presidency.

In its September 27, 2024, centennial announcement, The Carter Center reported that its work had positively impacted more than 80 countries, included 125 election-observation missions, and supported elimination of neglected tropical diseases in 22 countries. Those are the Center’s figures as reported in 2024, not current totals or a claim that every neglected tropical disease was eradicated everywhere.
Carter received the 2002 Nobel Peace Prize for his work on peaceful conflict resolution, democracy, human rights, and social and economic development. In his Nobel Lecture, he said: “The bond of our common humanity is stronger than the divisiveness of our fears and prejudices.”
