“Rome, in a Day” is season 1, episode 2 of Matlock (2024). CBS lists it at 43 minutes, rates it TV-14, and gives its original air date as October 17, 2024. The episode’s official synopsis says Matty is settling into Jacobson Moore as Olympia and “Team You Three” take on a lawsuit involving a developmentally delayed teenager accused of murder. CBS’s episode listing identifies Paramount+ as a U.S. streaming option; availability may vary by region and over time.
Matty tries to keep her cover intact
Matty opens the episode unsettled by the possibility of making a mistake in her assumed identity. In a nightmare, she arrives at Jacobson Moore with muffins and is challenged by Olympia, Julian, and Senior after getting the end date of the original Matlock series wrong. Once awake, she recognizes the risk of losing track of details she needs to keep straight.
Alfie reminds her that the job at the firm serves a larger purpose: she needs access to Jacobson Moore’s computer system to find damaging files connected to the firm’s pharmaceutical client. The case of the week offers Matty a chance to establish herself at work, but her investigation behind the scenes remains the reason she is there.

Why is Michael accused of murder?
Olympia assigns Matty, Billy, and Sarah to examine the case against Michael, an 18-year-old with a developmental disability. His family says he has been wrongly accused of killing a girl. The case appears to have two pieces of evidence against him: a witness says he saw Michael standing over the body, and bodega security footage seems to place Michael at the shop near the relevant time, reaching for the kind of condoms found at the crime scene.
Matty questions whether the video tells the whole story. She investigates the bodega owner, Jimmy, and compares the footage with a photo of herself reaching for the same item. The comparison helps expose that the security video was doctored, undermining the apparent link between Michael and the crime.

Who killed the girl, and what happened to the footage?
In court, Charlie, Jimmy’s son, admits he altered the bodega footage after accidentally killing the girl. His admission explains why the recording appeared to support the accusation against Michael: it had been manipulated. The episode’s courtroom reveal clears the way for the truth about the video to come out, even as Matty’s work on the case raises questions about trust within her own team.
Matty and Olympia navigate trust and family tension
Olympia initially keeps Matty away from the bodega visit, and Matty confronts her about the lack of trust. Their disagreement develops alongside the case rather than replacing it: Matty is trying to prove her value at the firm while also maintaining the identity she has constructed.

Matty also gets between Olympia and her separated husband, Julian, as they disagree about parenting.
