“It Isn’t Time That’s Passing” is a brief lyric attributed to Ruskin Bond. It recalls tenderness through summer afternoons and birdsong, then turns to a reflection on human change: time seems to pass, but the people living through it are the ones who change and depart.

What is “It Isn’t Time That’s Passing” about?

The poem begins by asking the reader to remember a shared past. Its speaker gathers intimate details—a summer landscape, birds calling, and a person whose voice remains bound to those memories. The closing thought reframes the scene: what feels like time passing is also the passage of human lives.

The poem’s emotional force comes from that shift. It moves from a specific recollection of closeness to a broader meditation on change and mortality, without turning the remembered tenderness into an abstract argument.

How the poem’s images shape its meaning

Summer and forest shadows

Summer afternoons and forest shadows give the recollection a vivid setting. They make the past feel sensory and particular, rather than like a general statement about nostalgia.

Birdsong and the remembered voice

The whistling-thrush and blackbird bring sound into the memory. Birdsong connects the landscape with the beloved person’s voice, so the natural scene carries emotional meaning as well as atmosphere.

The “black rose”

The image of a “black rose” adds a darker note to the poem’s tenderness. It sits alongside the summer and birdsong without resolving the poem’s mood into simple happiness; memory can be beautiful and shadowed at once.

What does the final couplet mean?

The poem’s closing lines state: “It isn’t time that’s passing by, / It is you and I.” The change in perspective is the poem’s central turn. Instead of treating time as an outside force moving forward, the speaker points to people as the ones who age, change, and eventually leave one another behind.

This is a reading grounded in the poem’s movement from remembered intimacy to reflection. It should not be mistaken for a documented explanation of Bond’s intent: no named statement by Bond about this particular poem is established in the available sources.

Attribution and publication context

The Wondering Minstrels posted the poem on 5 October 2003, attributing it to Ruskin Bond and crediting Ankur Agrawal as the guest contributor who submitted it. That post is a secondary online witness, not an authoritative manuscript or a verified record of the poem’s first publication.

Open Library catalogs Bond’s collection It Isn’t Time That’s Passing: Poems, 1970-1971 with a 1972 first-publication date, and Encyclopedia.com also lists the collection under 1972. Those bibliographic references establish the collection’s context; they do not independently verify when the individual poem first appeared in print or whether it is included in every edition. Open Library’s Ruskin Bond record and Encyclopedia.com’s Bond bibliography provide the catalog context.

A related refrain in Bond’s prose

A digitized passage titled “Binya Passes By” contains a closely related version of the refrain in a prose narrative about a remembered singer and the narrator’s melancholy. The echo is worth noticing, but the available evidence does not establish whether the passage came before the poem, adapted it, or shares another relationship with it. The digitized “Binya Passes By” passage shows the prose context.

What readers and commentators have said

Guest contributor Ankur Agrawal describes the poem on The Wondering Minstrels as using nature imagery to convey emotion and as evoking nostalgia and yearning. That is one reader’s response, not an authoritative critical consensus. The poem itself supports a reading centered on tenderness, memory, and the recognition of human passing.
